@thejulielogan@tylr@jongold yes x 100. We're close to releasing the API and plan to host a hackathon. We'll open it up to the world, of course but may also host something at @Noah_L's castle (no joke). :)
@zackshapiro from http://www.techinasia.com/12-sta...
"The next ones to launch are GifBook, which lets you buy flip books from animated GIFs. And after that, NomadList, which shows you the best cities in the world to live and work remotely in based on many factors, including quality and cost of living. With a growing community of remote workers, I think it’s a great audience to build something for. I’ll also be selling nomad guide books from there. "
@zackshapiro@levelsio I'd vote for WikiVoyage. I assume the nomad guides will be entrepreneur-focused, so traditional travel guides will be complimentary rather than competitive.
I love this! Added a couple of locations to the spreadsheet and will surely check back for inspiration.
Also, there should be a column for "average flight price". That's how we decide where to go for month-long workaways (open up Kayak Explorer, find the cheapest flight in the world, and book there), because it's a big piece of the budget.
I would love to work on products from a sweet lodge surrounded by beaches and jungle it's always hard to find suitable place. The Surf Office is also targeting freelancers to combine beaches with work.
I really like what @levelsio built here. Can't wait to give it a try.
@levelsio I realise that I'm late to the thread – but love the concept!
We’re currently working from our 4th continent in the last couple of years (aiming for all 7 some day!) and intend to relocate again in 2015... so this is a real gold mine of inspiration! Here are a few quick thoughts for making it even more of an awesome resource.
1) Have you thought about getting in touch with Derek Sivers (@sivers) at all? He's created a series of really awesome crowdsourced Asian Entrepreneurial guides (http://woodegg.com/) and might be interested in collaborating?
2) Drop @Bowei a line – he set up the excellent http://www.worldstartupwiki.org/ and I’m sure would also love to bounce ideas around too.
3) I’d love to see some functionality that let’s the community ‘Choose Your Own Startup Adventure’ – expanding on the criteria that you’ve already included and allow for greater serendipitous discovery of new locations based on the criteria that you enter (the team at http://teleport.org are building something like this also I believe).
4) I notice you are considering building a mobile app too. I once built an iOS app called ‘Alakazam’ – the concept was just to enter your budget and nearest airport and it then scraped the Skyscanner API to show all of the places that you could afford to get to that weekend as darts on a map (screenshot: http://bit.ly/1qQemyl) If you shook your phone it would pick one for you and send you to the booking page ;) Would be awesome to see a digital nomad version of this!
Keep up the great work!
You might want to check your numbers @levelsio. Omaha is not #2 (sort all by price) behind NYC. Those types of crowdsourced errors might make a customer lose faith in the rest of the numbers. Interesting concept however.
@levelsio Would love to be able to comment on the cities. For example I just went to Zagreb because I love that city. Was so amazing randomly traveling there last year and I wanted to comment about it. Unless I am missing something the site didn't seem to have any area for people to share their city stories.
Love Love Love NomadList and think it was definitely needed. Your 12 startups in 12 months is awesome in itself. Rooting for you!
Thanks @yvoschaap! I think my time is about fairly divided between front-end, back-end and marketing.
I'd say marketing is the most painful thing consuming my time though. It's just not fun to beg journalists to write about your projects, but you need to or you'll be without users. Luckily with sites like ProductHunt, it usually propagates to big blogs automatically.
Oh my god guys/girls! Just came back from a party in Manila to see my project on the top of PH! So amazing and appreciate this :) @rrhoover I was very inspired by the PH design for this actually, I hope you don't mind! I think this is the future of working and this might help people make a better decision on where to move to temporarily/permanently.
@levelsio Remote Working Hunt rocks :)
And of course we don't mind! It's not like we didn't take inspiration from others before us (e.g. Hacker News, reddit, Digg). Well done.
@levelsio I still remember your old blog post about people breaking into your vacation home, while home. It inspired me to get paranoid about redundant backups in physically separate locations, especially while traveling... Also, it's great that you built in local english speaking and safety ratings for those of us looking to leave our comfort zones.
Awesome @levelsio! Love seeing what you come up with.
What's your goal with this site, keep it simple or grow it into a more complex system? Where do you want to see it in 3 months? Who's using it, how are they using it?
Few quick thoughts:
1. Sometimes nomads don't really know what they want when they're searching for a next spot. They just know they want to GO. Sometimes they know what they vaguely want, but need to justify it and find logic to back up their decision.
How you filter this could be interesting/unique given the audience you're speaking to. The range of mindsets coming in that are, at the same time, diverse and very focused. Finding a way to smart-filter the results could create something really special. Starting with a system to narrow my search by country, price range, etc. and growing into something that is helping me ask the question while also giving me the answers.
But! Depends on what you want to do with the site :)
2. The links it goes to now don't bring much back to your site. It's a great opportunity to give/take with other sites and get some WOM going.
Could custom write Medium posts or invite people (with domain expertise) to write a custom post (f you're trying to start a dialogue).
Could add x3-5 different destinations per link, include a design element informing users that they should repeat click. So every time I click it's a new experience. Nomads like to wander/explore, after all! Great opp for easter eggs.
The links at the bottom seem more like another source of sharing/spreading the word on the site. In the same vein as Medium's next post recommendations. So think of it through that lens, too, and see what other ideas you come up with!
Hi @thejulielogan! I'd like to add complementary services/products for nomads, like guide books, nomad bundles (e.g. get a sim card, hotel stay and co working space all-in-one). Maybe a tiny simple forum too. We definitely need a more open community for remote workers.
Great tip, I'll definitely contact those sites to refer back. Maybe add some affiliate links too for monetization.
Our team loves Bangkok. Def. the right combination with a booming Startup scene, low cost of living, and lots of activities in the city and close proximity.
Not sure how Sofia can be so far up, I've been living there myself. I'd rather prefer the beautiful coastside in BG.
I love the wide range of filters, from geography to month to climate, safety, internet speed, and more. It's really helping me decide where to go next! :-)
My wife and I have discussed moving to SE Asia at some point in the future. This is a great resource to fantasize for a while ;) I would also suggest that you consider adding the Economic Freedom Index (http://www.heritage.org/index/ra...) or the Human Freedom Index (http://www.freetheworld.com/huma...).
