OpenIn 3 — Customize how links and files open in macOS

OpenIn helps you manage how links and files open on your Mac. For every link, you can select from multiple browsers, mail clients or apps for files, or configure based on where the file or link is opened, or based on location or domain.

This is a super helpful little app! It's a mere 2.8mb and yet does so much to make it easy to open links (and more) in different apps and browsers. I specifically use it to open links in specific Chrome Browser Profiles from my email client, Superhuman. This is necessary when you have, say, Google Docs links that need to be opened in either a personal or professional Google Account context. Notes on Version 3.0.0 ## New rules interface ## Simplified logic on how rules are applied Support for showing only running browsers ## Shortened URL resolver ## Before sending URL to the browser, you can resolve the URL and apply your custom rules ## Backup and restore ## Create backups of your configurations Export/import backups to move them between different computers ## JavaScript Scripting support ## Rewrite URLs with JavaScript before sending them to browsers or mail applications Write your own logic for rules ## Sharing ## Open URL from any browser to other browser with Share extension Use sharing menu from the app selection dialog to send URL to Notes, Reminders or other supported applications ## Other changes ## Ul/UX improvements Support for numeric pad keys in app selection dialog Support for opening multiple files and URLs at the same time Handle printing jobs Better support for dotfiles

Hi ?makers, Is it possible to setup rules for specific word instead of domain? For example, if the URL contains text "buy" it will open Safari, but if it contains text "docs" it will open Chrome. I think having something like RegEx rule would be great. Other than that it's really great product!

@rohmanhm you can just create a rule and write your own script to do anything special. In JavaScript there is a ctx available with list of the apps, and list of the urls. Based on the URLs you can configure which apps to show, which you don't want to show.

@outcoldman Can you add an example of how to do that? I just bought the app and I'm loving it. But it just missing this thing.

Hey @outcoldman I tried the app this morning and in the end I uninstall it because I don't really need it. But I can't manage to make it stop. I quit it from the menu in the menubar but it restarts again by itself. It seems there is a bug here, isn't it?
Denis Gladkikh
@benjamin_grandfond2 that is weird, how did you uninstall it? Make sure to quit it first from menu in menubar, after that move it to trash and probably empty the trash. My guess is you have assigned it to some URLs or file extension, and when you clicked it, maybe macOS restarted it even from the trash? Not sure if that is possible.

@outcoldman I tried to stop it before removing the app from the Applications folder. But for some reason the Mac restarted it. Note that I installed the helper too. I managed to remove the app doing it very quickly. But can’t remove the helper without killing it first. Hope it helps

👋 I am an author of OpenIn! I am really excited about the launch of OpenIn v3, it is a really big update, that is targeted for regular and advanced users! I believe the best way to introduce OpenIn v3 is to show how I use it, please take a look at the blog post https://loshadki.app/blog/2021-1... There are many reasons why I have decided to built OpenIn: - being able to monitor which apps are taking ownership of being default apps for file extensions. Could be really annoying to discover that tel: links are taken by Skype, when you always want to use FaceTime for that. So OpenIn can notify you if it is not a default application for links or file extensions - easy interface to configure how to open links in browsers, or open links directly in the applications with some rewrite rules - being able to choose quickly between different apps where I want to open this file Hope you will find this app useful for you! And I am happy to answer any question!

RIP its paid.

@grandwastaken there are several similar apps for sure, we are building OpenIn not only for links, but for mails, files, etc
