3 things that excite me: - Snap to gallery - split screen mode - video pop-out What are the performance stats vs something like chrome? I've been a long-time chrome user and more than happy to change but want some knock-out punches to convince me :) (good start is using google search vs bing ha, nice!)
Chet Callahan
@bentossell Hey Ben! Yeah those were definitely a few of our favorites internally as well. Under the hood Opera Neon is built using the same browser engine as the main Opera browser so performance figures will be similar to our tests we release on our main browser. Our main focus with Neon was to explore new ways of bringing beautiful web content front and center in the browser experience. Neon will not replace the current Opera browser but is simply our vision for the future of how browsers might look in the future. Some of its new features are expected to be added to Opera this spring.

@bentossell you are the voice of many early adopters.

@chetaaron apart from the highlighted features, i feel when AI comes into a browser, that will change everything. As a part of my research in this, i feel you can also consider this possibility in the future of the Neon (which is the future of the browser).
Chet Callahan
@think_andreah Just grab one of the tabs on the right and you'll see prompts showing you where to drop it to launch the split screen :)
Alexander Obenauer
@chetaaron Does that mean it'll get discontinued within a few months? I've already fallen in love with it and don't want to let it go, ever!
Austin Sandmeyer
Oh my goodness... I actually think I might love this. The video looks really light-hearted and fun. Real question... Battery Life? Please be good to me. It does the important things for sure...👇 But sadly no touchbar... 😢
Manny
This is beautiful! Going to set as my default for the next week just to play around. Love the fact that it uses clear icons for tabs on the right hand side, much easier to find where I was, especially using several billion tabs at a time
Chet Callahan
@mannyorduna Thanks for the kind words! Definitely let us know what you think after you've had some time to play around with it :)
Manny
@chetaaron I can't seem to set it as my default browser, keep clicking but it keeps un-asssigning after leaving the settings screen
Chet Callahan
@mannyorduna Check for a system prompt behind the window?
Chet Callahan
@mannyorduna No worries, glad you got it set up! :)
Manny
@chetaaron Would like to echo everyone else's opinion about the very much needed addition of extension support. Ads are the bane of my, and I suppose everyone else's existence.

Opera Neon is a concept browser built from the same browser engine as the Opera browser; it’s designed to allow users to focus on the most important part of the internet: the content. Opera Neon will provide users with fun ways to interact with web content, including the ability to drag and push things around, and even to even pop content out from the web.
Chet Callahan
@neerajt4 Thanks for the hunt! We are very excited to finally release our new concept browser, Opera Neon. By taking the established conventions of what desktop browsers have traditionally looked and felt like and throwing them out the window we freed ourselves to explore and re-imagine what desktop browsers could be. A few features debuting in Opera Neon's completely refreshed user interface include: New start page using users’ current desktop background image. A left sidebar with video player, image gallery, and download manager. A new visual tab bar on the right side of the browser window that makes it easier to distinguish between tabs. An intelligent system that automatically manages tabs; like gravity, frequently-used tabs float to the top, while rarely-used tabs will sink to the bottom. A completely new omnibox, supporting top search engines and open search. Also, new ways of enjoying web content have been added: Video pop-out, which lets users to watch videos while browsing other web pages Snap-to-gallery, which allows users to snapshot and crop any part of a web page and save to the gallery for later use. A split screen mode which allows for two pages to be used simultaneously. We would love to hear your thoughts!

From the video, I get a feeling that it's something like a Browser-as-an-OS?

Two big things missing that prevent me from using this today. DuckDuckGo as a search option I can set instead of Google (a must) and bookmarks. Lack of extension support would be a pain as well, but I can live without 1Password and uBlock Origin for a bit. Otherwise, it's nice to see some innovation around UX for the browser.
Reony T
@jameskoole just do this for DuckDuckGo or any other search engine you want. The settings of Neon are just like Chrome. In fact, it is a Chrome browser: https://duckduckgo.com/install?t=hs
Gabriel Szanto
Switch to incognito mode... 🐱‍👤
Chet Callahan
@gabszanto haha was hoping someone would comment on that 😄🖖
Niv Dror
Really cool it the browser blends with your background...

This is so sexy! It's so beautiful. I love a lot of things already - The UI - The video player by the side (It's so perfect for work 😂😂😂) - The way the Esc button turns off the crop snap This is really awesome. I would test it out as my default browser but no bookmarking yet :-(
Chet Callahan
@citizenfatimah Appreciate the kind words!! IRT bookmarks: We grew tired of browsers treating the web like paper documents, crudely stuffing them into a briefcase to sort out and come back to later, which is why one of the highlights of Opera Neon is that we have largely removed the need for bookmarking your favorite sites! The Speed Dials in Neon automatically collect your most frequently used sites with the ones you visit most often rising to the top and those shown less love eventually falling down and out of view. You can also drag tabs over into these Speed Dials manually if you don't want to wait for the system to do it automatically!
Pawel Kubasiak
@chetaaron @citizenfatimah So maybe think about history import functionality of user primary browser? Or just analyze it and drag the data about most important website to Newon? It could helps us to move our pined websites and most important url's to Opera :).
Maarten Belmans
@chetaaron @citizenfatimah I don't bookmark because it's my fav site (as in: frequently visited) , I bookmark because I may need the page again later on.

I am obsessed with Opera! Thank you for advancing our industry

My reaction: kdnonvovnv xmfvvnjnknfvnknv kvknosnvv!!!!!!! This is amazing!!!!
Yasha Prikhodko
Amazing! Touchbar support would be nice. However, i think extension support is a must have. I use LastPass frequently so having it on Opera Neon to fill in authentication forms will be extremely convenient.
Reony T
Can I import bookmarks? Then I'll try it as my default for a period of time
John
Hm.. maybe I'm missing something, but is there a reason that the promotional images show a transparent black border while I have the standard macOS gray border?
Matt Bradford-Aunger
😍 So much love for this. Great rethink of the tired browser designs we're all used to. Split screen is a wonderful concept too (though it's quite worrying how badly responsive design has been implemented in some cases!) 🙌 Props to the Opera team. Stunning work.
Chet Callahan
@matt_aunger Thanks for the love Matt!
Matt Bradford-Aunger
@chetaaron Maybe I'm being dumb, I can't get Facebook videos to work! I click them in my news feed but always get the "Something went wrong" message. The same videos work perfectly in Chrome.
Chet Callahan
@matt_aunger Fix is coming soon :)
Matt Bradford-Aunger
@chetaaron 🎉 Hooray! I'm not being dumb this time 😅
Chet Callahan
@matt_aunger haha ;p keep an eye out for the update on Monday :D
Fahm Sikder
Slick UI and the split screen browsing is amazing. I'm excited.
Nic Coates
👏 Hat (if I ever wore one) goes off to the Opera team! As soon as I saw the video, instantly downloaded & within 5 minutes am finding the UI slick, clean & overall it's pretty responsive. Congrats!
Chet Callahan
@gadgick Thanks Nick we are glad you like it!!
Csaba Kissi
Two things. Extensions support + VPN this is something I need in a modern browser, especially dev tools. The browser itself is very nice and fresh, I really like it.
Thomas Ricouard
I totally love it! Is there a way to have the black/translucent window bar like in the screens and video?
