Hello Product Hunt Community My name is Jon Gillham, Founder of Originality.AI, very excited to share Originality.AI on Product Hunt today! ***** Product Hunt Community Launch Day Free Offer ***** Signup at Originality.AI on Jan 10 PST and receive 500 credits (Enough to scan 50k words!) for FREE! No credit card is required. It is 2023 and especially with ChatGPT it is clear that the AI content genie is out of the bottle! With the proliferation of AI content the term “Original Content” needs to be redefined for 2023 and as digital marketers, we need to be armed with a modern set of tools to verify originality. I am a fan of AI content BUT I also strongly believe that the decision on when AI content should be used should be up to you the marketer/publisher paying for the content and not the writer. Before Originality.AI I built and sold a couple content marketing agencies where it became clear that a modern Plagiarism Checking solution along with an AI detection tool were needed! From that idea Originality.AI has been built. Originality.AI is a modern Content Originality Checking solution that we built specifically for serious Web Publishers and NOT students. If you are a digital marketer/content agency/web publisher this tool is built for us… Accurate AI Detector: - With 94% accuracy detect ChatGPT-generated content - Trained on all popular NLP models - See detection history Modern Plagiarism Checker: - Modern plagiarism checker built for serious web publishers - not students! - Add team members - See a scan history - auto-billing - 20% less expensive then the typical competition Chrome Extension: - Quickly check to see if any content was AI generated - Work within Google Docs or Wordpress to verify if the content was AI generated Whats Next: The team has grown and we are working quickly on the following improvements… - Highlighting AI content - Bulk site scanner - A big plagiarism checker upgrade Some Limitations: The ability to detect AI content is not 100% accurate and so it can generate some false positives. At 94% accurate on GPT-3 raw output it will not 100% of the time detect AI-generated content. However, over a large enough sample the results can be relied upon. Excited to hear your feedback.
Ken Savage
@jon_gillham good stuff Jon. Wish I had this two months ago when I wrote my ebook. I’ll be using this for some writers I have building the next ebook.
Jon Gillham
@kensavage sounds good Ken. Yah there have been some interesting discussions with writers based on the findings of Originality.AI. Some who swore they never used AI when confronted with data admit to it.
PubliKanguro Tecno - Marketing
@jon_gillham Thank you!!! I just Signed Up Originality. Thank you a lot for the 500 credits. I will try to detect AI texts today and tomorrow I will publish my results.

@jon_gillham It's such a great and helpful tool to have these days since a lot of AI writing tools are being developed. Quick question: Is there a target figure/percentage for an article to be considered ai-free?
PubliKanguro Tecno - Marketing
@jon_gillham I´m so happy, I just tried the Originality to scan a AI enerated 400 words text by ChatGPT and the results are: 100% AI generenated. Congratulations to the magicians who develop Originality, I will sign upo the Affiliate program and Will INVITE all my SEO Copywriters Friends to join Originality. We´re more than 15 SEO Copywriters. https://publikanguro.com/

With things evolving so rapidly in the space, it’s great to see innovation going into both sides - the rush to create and the rush to moderate Congrats on the launch ?makers !
Jon Gillham
@aridutilh thanks Air. Yah it is a fascinating time for generative AI. We are not "against" AI content but only believe that a publisher should be the one making the decision on when they will and will not use AI content.

I'm glad I found Originality.AI. I'm both a writer and an editor so it's extremely important for me to make sure that my own work doesn't get tagged as plagiarized - believe me, this is a challenge especially when I need to copy an exact quote from my sources so I have to make sure my content is at a safe percentage. I also always thought that no robot can ever take the place of writers, apparently there are many AI's these days that do the work. It was another challenge for me when my clients started asking for BOTH plagiarism-free and no-AI-used proofs. My usual go-to plagiarism checker doesn't have the AI detector capability. Using two different apps/programs won't be practical for me since I have to do checks almost every day. Thankfully, there's Originality.AI. I'm super thankful I also received those free credits as well, which gave me the chance to try it out before making a decision. Just one question though and I hope the maker would notice me - what's the basis for the AI detection percentage? I'm just wondering because I'm pretty sure I wrote all of my content and I never use an AI, in fact, I don't know how to use AI, but I'm still getting more or less 20% AI detection. I also need to know since I intend on using this a lot for articles from other writers that I check. Thank you!
Jon Gillham
@rona_field good news Originality.AI thinks your comment is 100% original. You are not a bot! It is saying there is a 20% probability that the content is AI generated and 80% probability it is human-generated. The tool is 94% accurate so there is always going to be some false positives. If you are getting under 20% probability of AI consistently that is good.
Rona Marie Field
@jon_gillham Thank you for your response! Just to be clear, 20% for AI probability is good enough, right? I'm asking so I can use this as a standard when checking articles submitted to me.
Nathan Petitpas
@jon_gillham @rona_field I'm curious too. A comment further below had a theory that if the content doesn't provide value and just states fact then it's usually a higher AI %.
Jon Gillham
@rona_field What I can suggest is that... 1. Look at a larger sample than 1 article to make a decision on a writer 2. A writer that gets typically very low scores has 1 higher score... not necessarily AI For example if you have a writer who submits 10 articles and these are the AI scores... Writer 1: 99, 75, 99, 99, 0, 15, 99 65, 74, 99 - Very good chance they are using AI with some minor edits to some articles Writer 2: 0, 0, 15, 0, 1, 40, 75, 0, 0, 20 - Very good chance they are not using AI but had a couple articles where they needed to write very formulaic content which can trigger a false positive Writer 3: 45, 55, 68, 99, 0, 43, 25, 15, 20, 65 - Hard to say anything conclusively but based on what we have seen this is likely heavily edited AI or AI used for some parts of the content

Like most people, when I first heard about orignaility.ai, I was a bit skeptical. But honestly, it has been a game-changer for me. Here's the story. As a content writer, I have been working in a popular content writing agency. Although there were many A.I. writing tools before, when ChatGPT came out, a lot of webmasters became conscious about the authenticity of the content. My content manager asked me 'If I ever used any A. I tool for writing?' I said, 'No, as I never did.' While we were talking, I let him know about orignality.ai and how it detects A. I content (as I was using it before). He checked my written content, and BOOM, it showed 100% original content. We also checked a good 200k words of content with originality, and I can confidently say that it was able to detect the A. I content with over 90% accuracy. Plus, the plagiarism checker also does great. Coming to the second part, originality.ai really made my content stand out as a writer. One of the things I noticed while using it is that if you write generic content that doesn't show your deep research skills, orginaility.ai will label the content as ai. In the start, this was a big headache for me. But later, I realized that your content has to be really authentic. It should have your own experiences and provide value. Otherwise, ChatGPT and A. I writing tools can also write plain simple facts too. If someone is a writer or editor, I recommend using orignality.ai one hundred. Not only would it detect A. I content but also help your content become better in many, many areas. I, however, have two questions about orignality.ai 1. Does the length of content impact the ability of orignality.ai ability to check ai content? 2. Is there any percentage of A. I contend that we should consider it safe and above it is a red flag.
Jon Gillham
@ihassanmnop such a great story to hear and thank you for sharing. Excatly the approach that many people are taking... if it looks like AI then it is likely at least not "great" content. Length - If there is a small amount of AI content in a large original article then yes that reduces the probability of AI. We are implementing a highlighting solution that will address this. Percentage of AI that is SAFE - Depends on who you ar wanting to be safe from... As a writer being safe from your editor/client might be different then your desired # if you are a publisher with a not very important site. I am working on how to help provide better guidance on this consistent question. If you know you wrote the article and you are under 20% then I would have no concerns!
Jon Gillham
@ihassanmnop it would be great to connect to hear more about your experience... can you reach out to me via email jon at originality
Shahana Akhter
I am delighted to find such an app that can detect not only plagiarism but also can detect AI content. Would you please confirm its perfectness?
Jon Gillham
@shahana_akhter it is not quite perfect... it is 94%+ accurate on ChatGPT
Adrian "AoverK" Kennedy
Great to see the product launch on ProductHunt. I've been using it for a few weeks and used to to recently hire 8 content writers and still have a list of more than 200 writers to screen. It saved me lots of time and money by being able to see when some writers used AI or plagiarized other web content with no attribution or references cited. This also protected my business by avoiding getting deranked or manually dinged by Google for using AI which could result in massive damage to my company and web presence otherwise. I found it via Spencer Haws at Niche Pursuits and since then Originality has become a part of our workflow now and is great especially when compared to products like Copyscape or Poem of Quotes. Looking forward to more great features and to seeing the project grow.
Jon Gillham
@aoverk that is awesome to hear!
Donko Tonev
This tool is amazing! Thank you for creating it. It is one of the best tools that I have used ever! When will it be able to highlight the AI content?
Conor Watt
@donko_tonev Thanks for the feedback Donko! Highlighting of AI content is coming VERY soon for content & website scans!! We have everything in place to execute this, just building the experience around it

I've been using Originality for a while and I can confirm it's a great tool for detecting AI-generated content. It's accurate, efficient and easy to use. Supporting multiple languages is also a plus. The tool offers great customizing options and explanations for flagged content. I definitely recommend Originality for anyone in need of a reliable tool for detecting AI-generated content. --- ChatGPT wrote that review (took 4 prompts to get it there). You need Originality to detect stuff like this. I ran it through Originality and got a 79% AI score...ran it through a couple other top tools and they said it's 99% human written. Not only is it 100% AI, it aslo has a few glaring inacuraccies (i'll let you figure out what it got wrong).
Jon Gillham
@john_webber_carved_ haha John this is my favourite comment. I was reading it and thinking wait what?? To clarify for everyone... 1. Originality does not YET support multiple languages for AI detection 2. Highlighting the suspected AI content is coming soon The bottom of comment is very much true! Originality.AI is able to detect ChatGPT while most tools that are built to detect GPT-2 content are not able to.
Shamilla
I've been using Originality AI for a while now as a plagiarism tool for my writing and I am really impressed with it. I really liked that Originality AI not only checks for plagiarism within your document but also detects the use of AI all at once. I just had one question: Is it possible for you to incorporate a package for payment? I mean one pays a specific amount per month and he/she can scan an unlimited number of words.
Jon Gillham
@shamilla we don't plan to offer different monthly plans since we know that could get confusing between payment packages. We like keep things easy/simple to use and the $0.01/credit pricing makes that easy!
Richard Gao
Does it only detect ChatGPT, or can it detect other ones like quillbot as well? Congrats on the launch!
Jon Gillham
@richard_gao2 it detects ChatGPT plus all OpenAI NLP models (GPT-2, GPT-3, GPT-3.5) and Eleuther AI NLP models (GPT-J, GPT-NEO). It does not detect quillbot (yet)... but on our list for training it to detect that.
Gary Miklos
@richard_gao2 @jon_gillham Do quillbot, jasper, copyshark, etc. use GPT behind the scenes? I thought it would work with those
Jon Gillham
@richard_gao2 @gergo_miklos it does... pretty much all the available AI Writing tools connect to the OpenAI GPT-3 API.

Originality AI has solved a lot of my problems for me as a writer, editor, publisher, and marketer. Dealing with search engine algorithms and picky clients has made me dabble a lot into AI writing along with your usual writing. I manage a team of 10-12 writers and this AI has changed the way I have streamlined my content creation process, as I have to maintain a fine ratio of the original and ai content in my content pieces. In some pieces I have to keep no traces of ai so the flagging system on Originality AI's is pretty advanced. Compared to some of my other plagiarism detection devices like Grammarly PRO and Copyscape, I can safely deduce that this one is the most advanced and easy to edit content editor there is. I get done with edits in a matter of minutes. On top of that, the new google extension had made life so much easier as I can check what webpage is Ai generated and what isn't within seconds! That is the best, and Its worth it to maintain my subscription just for that. I get so many features with this its unreal. A question I have been dying to know is that how similar this app is to Google's AI detection system? If I remove all flagged content in my edits, will Google also then find that everything is original, or do they have a different detection mechanism? Can't wait for you to keep bringing new features!
Jon Gillham
@dsaami34022 great to hear it has made your life easier! Regarding your question... we are NOT Google... so I do not know.
Shahana Akhter
This app is a time demand when so many AI apps are in the market, and most writers use these tools. So, to detect AI writing, this app will play a vital role. Moreover, we need to spend extra money to check for plagiarism. Try to make the app perfect and less costly.
Jon Gillham
@shahana_akhter we hear you on the price. We don't plan to be the cheapest. There are free GPT-2 detectors but our plan is to be the most accurate and useful detector for serious web publishers.
Erica Martin
Do you have any plans to launch a Microsoft Word extension?
Jon Gillham
@erica_martin1 not yet... you are the first user to ask for this. What is your use case as a writer or editor or student?
Erica Martin
@jon_gillham I'm a writer. I write most of my stuff in Word and then upload or copy and paste it into the website I'm submitting it to. So having a Word add-in would be helpful.
Jon Gillham
@erica_martin1 great thank you for the idea... we have added it and your comment to be considered as a future feature.
Spencer Haws
Congrats on the launch! I'm glad that I could be an early beta tester and user of Originality. I've hired well over 20 writers in the past year, and going forward I'll be using Originality to make sure I'm getting original and quality content before hiring. I'm sure this is just the beginning of an awesome AI content detection tool!
Jon Gillham
@nichepursuits Thanks Spencer... appreciate your input along the way and support on this project!

As a professional Copywriter, it is my duty to deliver plagiarism-free content to my clients. The quickest way to check my articles for plagiarism is by using OriginalityAI. It not only tells me what percentage of my articles is considered plagiarized but also finds similar articles on the Internet. While some percentage of plagiarism is acceptable (due to keywords and specific descriptions), it should ideally lie under 10%. OriginalityAI has made my job much easier in this regard. I also like how it allows you to detect any trace of AI in your work. My clients often pay extra attention to AI presence in their articles. This is because Google rejects AI-written pieces for SEO purposes. One way to prove my articles are AI-free is by using OriginalityAI. I am grateful for the free credits OriginalityAI provided me with. Little did I know I would soon find the best proofreading tool on the Internet. I've since decided to invest in more credits, as it makes my job much easier. My only question is about the nature of AI detection. How exactly does it work? It sometimes rates the AI content in my articles as high as 20 %, even though I use no such tools at all. Does some percentage of content always resemble an AI? Regardless, I'll certainly be using OriginalityAI for years to come. Thank you for developing such a wonderful product!
Jon Gillham
@filip_ailer Thanks for the comment and glad you have been successfully using Originality.AI. No AI detection tool will ever be 100% accurate and our tool will have some false positives. It is best to think about the AI score across a large sampling of content not just a binary decision on 1 article. What I can suggest is that...
Nathan Petitpas
Jon, with uncertain times and countless google updates we're able to consistently* catch AI written content that could negatively impact our sites that generate traffic via SEO. Although like many others, I also wonder about thresholds and accuracy. I've contacted support, ran the tool on 100s of articles, read the comments here and all blog posts from Originality.AI but still don't have a great gauge on what % should "fail AI" checks. Since this seems like a recurring issue or question, myself and many others would benefit from a public statement or protocol. Something like: "10,000 words from the same source or 5 articles longer than 2k words with a combined AI% of 20%+ is likely 99% AI generated content after considering the current inaccuracies and state of the tool." Would you all be able to provide a suggested protocol like this?? -- After many tests, our current threshold is no more than 15% certainty it's AI or we send it back to the writer. But when I test my writing and close colleague's writing, it's never more than 5% AI. So this raises concern if the writers are re-writing AI content to make it easier on them, how accurate the tool really is, and how different writing styles may be interpreted. For anyone else here, what're your current thresholds for other writers and what % does your personal writing typically flag for?
Jon Gillham
@nathan_petitpas Hi Nathan. Appreciate the questions and fully agree this would be helpful. Everyone ultimately needs to make their own risk-based decision. For example, some people are trying to figure out... how much do I need to edit AI so that it is undetectable while others are trying to determine what is the AI suspected threshold to KNOW it wasn't AI. The reality is that predicting AI is not the same as determining plagiarism. I am working on some communication/guide on how to help with different objectives. What I can suggest is that... 1. Look at a larger sample than 1 article to make a decision on a writer 2. A writer that gets typically very low scores has 1 higher score... not necessarily AI For example if you have a writer who submits 10 articles and these are the AI scores... Writer 1: 99, 75, 99, 99, 0, 15, 99 65, 74, 99 - Very good chance they are using AI with some minor edits to some articles Writer 2: 0, 0, 15, 0, 1, 40, 75, 0, 0, 20 - Very good chance they are not using AI but had a couple articles where they needed to write very formulaic content which can trigger a false positive Writer 3: 45, 55, 68, 99, 0, 43, 25, 15, 20, 65 - Hard to say anything conclusively but based on what we have seen this is likely heavily edited AI or AI used for some parts of the content Is this the type of information you are looking for to be able to make an actionable plan on how to handle Originality.AI scores?
Nathan Petitpas
@jon_gillham That makes sense and I see the rationale behind different uses and "thresholds'. Yet the data I have on this is limited to a few 100 articles and even a few 1000 articles may not be enough for us to have a concrete understanding of what flags/ why it flags/ set fair thresholds since it seems the interworking are somewhat proprietary. Plus, I'm not a data analyst. Yes, this is exactly the type of information that would help those in the SEO realm feel more confident in the scores and how we handle the content. We don't want to falsely accuse writers either so something from the horses mouth -- even if you make no guarantees on the threshold/ protocol -- would allow us to be more firm on our thresholds or stances. I'll be keeping an eye out on the blog in hopes you all release something like this but let me know if I can subscribe to a newsletter or anything to be notified of new publications. Thanks!
Anjum Sayed
This is excellent! It's great to see tools like this emerging. What model do you use to analyze the text and how much data were you able to train it on?
