Overcast is my favorite podcast player. It does just what you need although I've been missing the streaming capability which is now supported (woohoo!).
I also paid $4.99 for the extra features, particularly the sleep timer.
@mijustin fair. Patreon is an interesting company if you've never heard of them. I think it could be a great model that kind of forks off of crowdfunding since many people are pretty comfortable with it now
I use Overcast every day and bought the premium! The Smart Speed feature has saved me over 3 hours of time (super cool to see). Thanks for the awesome app, keep it up!
Sidenote, favorite startup podcasts to listen to on my Overcast app:
The Startup Chat with @steli and @hnshah
The Rocketship Podcast (@michaelsacca)
Startup School Radio (@harris)
The App Store listing on what's new in 2.0:
- Streaming
- Chapters
- Storage management
- Icon badge option
- Play-by-priority option
- Smart Speed now dynamically adjusts to quiet voices
- Lots of bugs fixed, including playlist reordering and storage growth
- Tons of little improvements and optimizations
Also, all features are now free. A new optional monthly patronage is available.
*grumpy mode on* Jeez, ProductHunt, fix the posting process. I tried to post this but was redirected to the Overcast 1.0 page, Viraf posted this with a different URL: https://www.producthunt.com/tech... and got four upvotes (including mine) and now this pops up. */grumpy mode off*
Besides that: I hope to see that Marco makes a solid living on the sales of Overcast. Payed for the extra features 'cause its one of the finest podcast clients on iOS planet.
Been using this since first version was released with paid upgrade. Now happy to give patronage as well - use this app daily. And with streaming just need a way to ping my product hunt podcast up votes to overcast.
This is my favorite podcast app. Its new business model is quite interesting. In short-term it would definitely be a success, I'm a bit worried for the long term though.
Also the podcast recommendation feature is quite interesting.
p.s. Overcast actually shows how many people had become patrons today :)
After playing a bit with the app I would only change one thing, as a listener when I'm picking an episode to listen I always read the show notes to see if it's worthy, usually podcast descriptions are long so I feel a popup isn't adequate for reading title + description.
Just an Idea to explore: As a podcaster something I would love is the ability to get patrons per episode, it's a way to get revenue and I wouldn't mind giving a % to the owner of the platform ;)
@crisgarner Amazing, we (@adorilabs) have the exact same idea. Monetizing podcasts, especially in "gentler" ways (such as your per episode patronage vs. say "harder" micropayments and some other ideas we are working on). Would love to stay in touch.
All New version of Overcast. From the launch post - "It’s mostly a major under-the-hood improvement, with relatively few user-facing changes". He's also made all the features free, which is pretty exciting.
