Overlap is a new, YC-backed podcast app that uses AI to curate the best podcast moments FOR YOU. We replace full episodes with clips, subscriptions with topic-based podcast clip playlists, and top charts with personalized recommendations.
Hi Product Hunt fam 😻
Like so many of you, we at Overlap (YC S24) love podcasts. Our CEO Jonathan’s favorite podcast has long been Acquired, Casey’s is Impaulsive (how Gen Z) and mine is Freakonomics.
But these days, more and more people are engaging with podcasts in new ways:
⏱️Through clips instead of full-length episodes
🕵️Through topic-based searches instead of via subscriptions
✨Through algorithmic recommendations on social media, not global podcast charts
We think the podcast apps aren’t adapting to this future - so for the past year we’ve been building Overlap.
Overlap is a new iOS mobile app that uses AI to curate the best podcast moments for you.
Each day, we’ll send you personalized clip-based playlists on topics you’re interested in – whether that’s Is Consumer Space Travel Here?, Kevin Hart’s Funniest Moments, or A Brief History of Credit Cards. Or if you have a topic in mind, prompt our AI to generate a custom playlist for you.
Please reach out at admin@joinoverlap.com if you have ANY feedback at all and thank you so much for reading this far and considering downloading Overlap.
@kjosephabraham ah good q! Here’s the name origin: For any topic on Overlap, overlapping voices and clips come together from different podcasts to make one playlist.
@a_zelenkov Great callout. Users can generate their own playlists and share them with anyone but not yet in-app. Some kind of feed to see what kind of playlists people are generating could be very interesitng.
Congrats on the launch! Overlap has been awesome for getting the most out of the podcasts I listen to. I also love being able to send friends more targeted clips from episodes or curated playlists. Can’t wait to see all the new stuff you come out with
This sounds intriguing! I'm curious about how the AI curates these clips. What kind of metrics are you using to determine the "best" moments? Also, any thoughts on how you'll handle user-generated content for playlist creation? Excited to see how Overlap evolves, @buzz_rubenstein!
@garrytan@ivan_ilin Hey Ivan! Thanks for checking out the product. We have deals with a lot of the podcasters on the app and also use short form video to drive our users to the podcasters' RSS feeds
Great job Team! Happy to see you curating such an incredibly amount of podcasts, making us to focus on what really matters for us. Wish you all the best here! Congrats!
@roopreddy Great q! Our playlists are ~15-20 minutes long and definitely fit well into commutes (avg. commute is 25 mins in the US), which is the primary podcast listening occasion. But some users also use it while cooking, doing laundry, scrolling before bed...
Hey @buzz_rubenstein I'm not the biggest podcast listener, I only listen when I'm traveling, so this is perfect for extracting the key takeaways from different topics. Love it 👏🏻
Thanks for sharing 🙏🏻
Incredibly cool AI use case - I love how this completely eliminates my decision paralysis when it comes to deciding which podcast to listen to. Looking forward to using this more!
Love it! The custom playlists are great for getting smart on a topic fast and sampling a bunch of the longer form podcasts to figure out what could be worth listening to. Also really like the “best moments” feature for when I don’t have time to listen to a full podcast. The curation is great.
Congrats on the launch team! My psychological limit is around 1 hour for a podcast and most of the time half of the content could be easily skipped. A distiller tool like yours could work on those podcasts that seem like they forgot to press the 'stop' button :) Let's see how the market will react to you and your product, best of luck 🍀 Btw, I am looking for a podcast app for Android, I don't like to pay Spotify just to listen podcasts for a subpar user experience. If anyone knows a better candidate, please let me know!
@mlkrsrc Thanks Mustafa - you totally hit the nail on the head. We're only on iOS for the moment but will definitely have an Android app in the not too distant future
