I am having difficulty understanding the product hunt tagline. "Netflix for healthy eating" doesn't make sense to me. Can someone clarify? Thanks.
Christina Bognet
@mikebronfman @craignb It means you can borrow your friend's password ;) Just kidding. It's referring to the ability to personalize your menu to your preferences, make recommendations aligned with what you like and don't like, and get better over time based on your ratings.

@craignb @cbognet COOL! I like that - thanks for the clarification. Do you guys offer service in the Boston area?
Christina Bognet
@craignb @mikebronfman We offer our personalized lists + recipes product in Boston (and everywhere) but delivery is only in SF and LA for right now. I lived in Cambridge for 7 wonderful years though :)

@mikebronfman It means it's a buffet. :)

I signed up yesterday and got my first order today!

@mikebronfman @craignb @cbognet To me, the Netflix comparison works because I pay for only what I want, based on my unique profile. (yeah, why does anyone have cable anymore?) I don't have to search through thousands of ingredients to build my own shopping list, etc. I've been a Platejoy user for a long time with my family. Platejoy knows my diet, knows what I have surplus of, and recommends a fully optimized menu. Similarly, when I open up Netflix, I'm suggested every princess movie possible (my two daughters can fully navigate Roku). Every week, Platejoy recommends the meals they know I love and that fit my families dietary preferences. Yes, it may cost a few extra dollars, but we eat out A LOT less (which actually saves money), and the nutritional quality of our meals is exponentially better. A win win in my book.

PlateJoy rocks. Food is a crowded space, but PJ is pretty different. Fans food on wheels startups are satisfying when you're in a hurry, but they aren't great for you and you get sick of them pretty quick or if you don't want to feed your kids fast/restaurant food every day. On the other side, grocery delivery let's you make great good, but you have to do all the work of putting together the recipes, ordering the right stuff, etc. PJ is great because you tell it how you want to eat, it gives you recipe options, and you get all the right stuff. It even works if you're not a good cook. Definitely give it a try. Note: I'm a very happy investor as well as customer.

So you find what recipes I like and then tell me what groceries I need to buy too? That's awesome.
Paul Shapiro
@dinwal Yeah! And they deliver everything you need fresh in SF and LA. Makes eating well and having what I need super convenient, recipes are great, everything is tailored to me + my girlfriend. Hard to find something that works so well.

@cbognet I assume you focus on things that are in season. Can people make requests for healthy, interesting ingredients (e.g. Fiddlehead Ferns)? I just went through the process and I like the questions you asked to get a sense of what I might like. I have to admit, I am still reluctant to hit buy - since it is over $100 and I don't know exactly what will arrive and how long it will take to cook things. I may go back through and try to scale back to try just a few dinners. Love the concept.
Christina Bognet
@corleyh Yes, we do! And you can absolutely make requests! All customers can set up free 15 minute calls with our chef team anytime to help develop a menu that best fits their needs. For example, you can say, "we're planning a date night and want something special" or "I'm training for a marathon and need the best foods to support my activity level" and we'll make it happen. As for how long it will take to cook things - you get to dictate how much time you have for dinners in your Personalization Quiz, and we'll make sure your recipes match the time you can dedicate. Breakfast and Lunch always take less than 10 minutes. We definitely recommend sampling just 1-2 days of each course to start. :)

I'm so happy to see a service that is personalized, low-effort, and doesn't have a crazy amount of waste!

Hi everyone -- lovely to be here! I lost 50 pounds a few years ago and realized that the options for healthy eating are limited to frozen meal delivery services or nutrition apps that never worked for me. We started PlateJoy to bring personalization to food and help others eat well consistently. A few things: 1. We care a lot about personalization. You start off by taking a fun lifestyle quiz about foods you love, avoid, recipe complexity, time constraints, preferences and more. We then build a menu that fits your definition of healthy – with vegetarian, paleo, vegan, gluten free, dairy free, and kid friendly plans available. 2. We care a lot about reducing packaging waste, so things like spices aren't pre-portioned into little plastic containers. Instead we create a Digital Pantry of your kitchen which takes inventory of what you have and keeps track of what you use each week, only replenishing things like cinnamon or olive oil when you need it. Your food is also hand-delivered locally in sustainable paper bags and not packaged on dry ice and/or sent via Fed-Ex. 3. We offer delivery in greater San Francisco and LA. Our personalized grocery lists + custom menus are available all over the country. You can use coupon code YAYPH for $20 off your first order at platejoy.com More than happy to answer questions and feel free to reach out directly at christina@platejoy.com. Thank you!

@platejoy @cbognet congrats on the launch! if Michael Pollan's simplified motto is "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants" what's yours?
Christina Bognet
@platejoy @eriktorenberg "You are the sum of the five things you eat the most." ;)
