Loving many things about the PlateJoy concept, particularly the customizable menu plans. The ux isn't as fab as the food styling just yet: I couldn't tell how many recipes (or meals) were included in the plan I'd configured. And a sample recipe or two would go a long way towards assuring me that PlateJoy's recipes would be detailed and easy-to-follow. No showstoppers here -- grow grow grow!
We at Shape have been using PlateJoy for the past two months. It's been a a great service for us to try interesting new low-carb dishes that we otherwise wouldn't have cooked. Definitely recommend it if you want to try something new.
This looks really cool! I’ve been trying to lose weight for a while and I’ve definitely realized the most important thing is just to have the right kind of food around, and know what to do with it.
You’re collecting a lot of data on each user. What are some of the other ways that you personalize the groceries and recipes you send?
@fighto Hi Paul! The data are around things like whether you are vegetarian, dairy free, or pescatarian; which ingredients you simply don't like; how many carbs or calories you’d like to stay under, how much time do you have to cook, the appliances you have on hand, etc. We select from our database of thousands of recipes based on those criteria. The recipes are customized further based on your answers to questions such as whether you prefer whole wheat pasta or regular, whether you want the convenience of pre-chopped vegetables or prefer to receive whole vegetables that you chop yourself, etc. That results in a shopping list that we use to deliver your groceries (if you are in our delivery zone; if not, that is what we provide you to shop for yourself).
The meal pictures really look gorgeous! Almost willing to sign-up but I don't get why I can't get more than 2 lunches / dinners for a week (I also tried to select "no leftovers" and "large portions").
@bruno42 Hey Bruno! We limit your first delivery so that you can get a feel for things without getting overwhelmed -- you can adjust your plan size later.
Awesome product, I would definitely use it! First, there is a definite pain/problem that it can help to solve. Second, making healthy eating a habit is quite difficult, and many of us need a help with that. And last, it sounds very easy to use, and hopefully may have a long-term effect, which many diets really lack of. Looking forward to trying it!
Hi PHers!
PlateJoy makes weight loss effortless by stocking your fridge with exactly what you need to lose weight. After losing 50 lbs a few years ago, I realized that weight loss is about eating well (not exercise) and that behavior change is impossible. The real key to getting to your goal weight is making healthy, delicious eating the default option in your life, instead of punishing yourself with diet food. So we use over 50 data points about how you eat and live to stock your kitchen with fresh, personalized groceries and custom recipes to prepare awesome meals!
Here are the top 5 things you should know:
1) You don’t have to change your life (or what you love) to lose weight on PlateJoy. You can be anything you want to be. Vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free, paleo, vegetarian, and more options are available. You can also choose to exclude any ingredients that you don’t like.
2) You can enter a starting weight and goal weight, and we’ll customize your portion sizes.
3) We keep track of what you already have at home, so that you can opt out of receiving any ingredient easily.
4) You can tailor your recipes to your time constraints.
5) We charge you the cost of your groceries at the store + $8 delivery; everything is delivered fresh and locally without packaging waste.
We look forward to helping you reset your defaults by having fresh food in your fridge from here on out. We deliver all over the Bay Area and our meal planner service is available across the country.
Would love to answer any questions + thanks for checking it out!
Christina

@eriktorenberg The main formula comes from calories in calories out. A single donut can net you 200 calories, running for 20 minutes burns ~200 calories. So you can either run for an hour or skip the extra 3 donuts. However with people that are extremely active it's the reverse where they need to eat a ton of high calorie foods to keep their body energized. So while we might eat 2000-3000 calories per day (our bodies naturally burn 2k-2500), Michael Phelps has to eat upwards of 12k
For gaining weight, you need to put on an excess of 3500 calories a week. So if you naturally burn 2500 per day, you need to eat 500 more calories to hit your 3500/week limit. As my friend best put it, drinking an oreo cookie shake is the difference between cutting and bulking. Oreo cookie shakes have about ~1k calories.
@eriktorenberg there are ton of articles on the net about. The (very) basic is that food is fuel. If you put crap in, no amount of exercise will help because it's like putting shitty gas in your ferrari ;) you put the proper fuel that doesn't react to your body it allows it operate at the optimal level. That and getting proper amount of sleep is the basis of weight loss with working out helping with increasing the level of fitness and health your body can handle...
I absolutely love PlateJoy. This app has been a godsend. I want to eat healthy, but have gotten so bored with the recipes I already know.
Every week, I get a customized shopping list and dairy-free recipes (which my tummy is glad for). The food is delicious, variety is plenty, and the recipes are easy! PlateJoy, thank you for making my food life easier!
I've used plate joy for over a year now and I can't say enough good things about this app. It really helped me with saving time on having to make a list and find healthy recipes before going to the store. The meals are always great my whole family really likes them we love trying new healthy meals. Also when I ran into a little problem on the site they got back to me so quick and solved my problem. I love this company I would recommend it to anyone.
I am a little confused. Do you just give the shopping lists and the recipes or you also do the grocery shopping? Doesn't it really depend on the market price wise? For example here in New York city everything is ridiculously expensive. I live 5 min away from a Whole Foods but every time I go,I need to spend a paycheck!
The setup on this is great. I love that it's not a delivery service but a tool to empower. 90% of weight loss is mental ownership of the process and in my opinion you've set this up perfectly to assist in that. Nicely done.
