Ok... this is really really useful for any SaaS business that's serious about getting their financials right. Use ProfitWell's new Revenue Recognition system to get your SaaS financials up to audit-proof GAAP standards with just one-click. Got SaaS? Check it out now.
@hnshah@jiaqip hey there - Patrick here from ProfitWell. There's certainly a few pieces that are key to differentiate us and ChartMogul.
For one, our base metrics are completely free, so all of your churn, MRR, cohorts, etc. come out of the box all ready to go. There's more here on the strategy (http://blog.profitwell.com/why-w...), but essentially we found that it made a lot more sense long term to make money through upsells like ProfitWell Recognized and ProfitWell Retain than to charge for metrics. Essentially, our business models are different where we're opting to charge for more value aligned pieces of optimization. Different way up the mountain, but certainly both can be effective.
Further, we tend to see that we're more accurate when comparing the metrics provided by both platforms. We care about accuracy above all else, and if there are any bugs/glitches related we drop everything to make sure the data maintains its integrity (especially on the free product). This goes deep into how we actually calculate metrics on the SaaS and GAAP side, as well, where we're actually using baseline change data, rather than just invoice data.
Ultimately, I also think we just fundamentally see the world very differently on where the market's going. We don't think you should have to toggle, filter, or think about your metrics - we just want them to tell you the problem (for free) and then give you products that are value priced to solve those problems (if you want, of course). CM has more toggles and such, which can be helpful, of course. Very different approach, and I'm happy to explain why we think ours will win out, but again - different ways up the mountain. Neither of us will likely be 100% right, but we're hoping we're more right than wrong. :)
@hnshah@patticus love the comparison, you really nail it. I have been reading your blog for quite some time. So I actually do know some differentiation between PW and CM, but it´s always great to hear it from the founder himself ;)
We haven´t set any pricing intelligence tool yet, looking forward to implementing PW. Any technical guide or tutorial to begin with?
@hnshah@jiaqip Ha. Good to know. Always happy to go deeper, too.
In terms of implementation or technical guide, there really isn't much (and that's kind of the point :)). You just auth in with your billing system - we cover most of them (Stripe, Chargebee, Recurly, Zuora, Braintree, etc.).
If you're using something custom, then our API is really easy to use and we have a Ruby Gem you can deploy, as well.
Everything that Patrick and his team makes is just so. damn. useful. We've been using their Dashboard for years, Retain for about a year and soon Revenue Recognition. And it's all just one-click value.
This is a no-brainer for startup founders.
For years I did this manually with scripts and spreadsheets, webhooks, you name it. And no matter how hard we tried it still needed to be checked and smoothed by a human - it is remarkable that PW has gotten to the point where the metrics are SO ACCURATE that they passed a formal audit by a Big 4 accounting firm. Just wow.
@lay2000lbs Thanks!
Fun side story: Our video producer and I are in Sydney and we ended up not being able to shoot the video before we left (knowing we wanted to launch today).
We ended up being under the gun in-between meetings needing to shoot, edit, clean up, etc everything in just over an hour. We ended up shooting the video in 10 minutes and getting everything out the door within that time period.
I don't think we would be able to do that again! We got incredibly lucky. :)
@dcancel I'm excited to check this out for sure. Been using ProfitWell for a while now - one of my favorite emails in the morning! (Some days at least :p)
Bit confused as to what this does and how I get access to it, personally. Can you summarise it briefly, please?
For our accounts we simply run a script against the Stripe API which let's us know which users payments come in which particular payout from Stripe. Is there more that this can offer us?
@td_evans Great question, Thomas. (Big fan of EmailOctopus btw - refer to your glyph and pricing focused strategy a lot)
I'm not sure what you're exactly running with your script or if you are doing revenue recognition, but from your description it sounds like we're talking about different things. Assuming that assumption is right:
Recognizing your revenue involves ensuring that you're tracking the exact exchange of your service for the payment you're receiving. There are a number of reasons that this is important from an accounting compliance perspective, but a good finance person can actually do wizardry to your planning by knowing how cash is flowing and being recognized in your business.
If you sold TVs, this would be relatively easy, because you'd recognize the $1k you receive in exchange for the TV the day the sale was made. For subscription businesses, it's actually incredibly complicated, because you're providing your service at very specific intervals that depend on the term of when the user starts paying you for your software and for how long.
If this customer signed up at 12:00:01 on the first day of the month, then you could recognize revenue for a $30 monthly user across each of the days of the month. Here's the problem though - customers sign up at all days of the month, they sign up for different plans, they upgrade, they downgrade, they cancel, they churn, they then come back, they use different currencies, the sign up for longer term plans where you receive the money up front, they sign up for shorter term plans, they're in different time zones, and there's a whole host of other variables that affect revenue recognition.
Keeping track of all of the above is a real pain in the rear if you: 1. Need/Want to do revenue recognition (not all businesses need to do this), and 2. Have any meaningful customer count (anything above 1k customers with a number of the variables above. You end up with a crazy amount of spreadsheets that are highly prone to error or an extremely high maintenance codebase that few engineers at the company want to end up working on over the core product the company sells.
Essentially, ProfitWell Recognized solves this problem. We went through all the paper-cuts and edge cases to account for every single change described above to properly account for revenue for recurring revenue businesses. It's actually quite a daunting technical challenge, especially when dealing with some of our customers who have hundreds of thousands of users that all need to be accounted for constantly throughout the month.
This may have been intense overkill, but long story short - if you need revenue recognition for your company and you wan to do it accurately, it's a tough problem and we're basically making it a 1-click solution that integrates directly through the billing system. The result is your finance and accounting teams can actually do their job, which is supposed to be strategic planning, rather than spending 75%+ of their time closing the books.
That make sense? Happy to dig deeper. I tried to walk through this at a proper level of depth, but I may have just confused you more. :)
@patticus Got it! We're not doing anything quite that technical yet, so will raise with our accounts guys/girls and make sure we're all above board. Thanks for the explanation, much appreciated.
Patrick and his team understand your financials better than you do. Their products give you the understanding you need to run a tight ship and ensure you're maximizing growth.
Cool idea but your landing page from PH is a bit broken. Header/footer links don't work, you have to go to the main homepage and then browse from there.
@patticus I'm still experiencing it ( Chrome Browser ) Basically when hovering over any Link ( features for example ) the link i'm directed to is the PH landing page so it's just reloading or not taking any action. Maybe it's just from my side
Great to see ProfitWell here. Been using the product for over 4 weeks now and the experience has been great. Integration with Chargebee is smooth but more importantly the insights we have been able to generate. If you are a Saas business, this is a great tool to try.
Cool product, just wanted to point out that I believe you are missing "we'll" in this headline, "Whether for your board or your investors, the team of accountants and engineers at ProfitWell have your back."
Excited for this! I've been using ProfitWell or a few years and jumped onto their Retain product as soon as it was available (which has retained 60% (!!!) of our MRR), excited to add more power to my ProfitWell. My understanding of how to properly do revenue recognition is.... limited, so I'm super excited to hire ProfitWell to do this job.
great work @patticus - a sort of un-related question; do you intend to update any of your business metrics around the decision to go freemium; especially around long-term prognosis?
@bhajw Absolutely. I know I've said that to you before, but I promise you it's coming.
I'd argue our resolve for freemium at the very least has influenced our competitors to try and/or actually go freemium, as well, which means that we had at least some impact on the market. Based on our numbers though and the numbers of others, I'd argue that our hypothesis provided to be correct. Yet, it doesn't mean there weren't some pretty big challenges that we missed on our initial analysis. More on this later. :)
ProfitWell is hands down the easiest, cleanest and most concise reporting on all the metrics I care about as a sales leader. Two thumbs way up.
On top of that Retain keeps more money in our bank account and PW's blog content gives us expert-level info on the topics that matter for our business. Overall a great company doing great things.
Excited for Revenue Recognition. If it's anything like what I've seen from them in the past it's a no-brainer. :)
Really admire the ProfitWell ethos (and, as a free user, the biz model!). Everything you guys create is Just Right - can only imagine the amount of effort going on behind the scenes to make it so.
@humanismusic insane amount, and trust me when I say that we take every little piece of feedback probably too seriously, because we aim to produce pixels that make your life easier and ultimately get you back to focusing on your customers and your product.
I know those great tools already. And I recently signed up to give it a shot. I like the clean UI much. But what I don't get tbh is, why it's free? How do you profit from that? At the end of the day it's all about the money :)
Anyways: Great product!
