I'm a huge fan of Range. I use it daily with my product and engineering teams. The Slack update is pretty great - I love being able to see at a glance how people are doing (and if they've slipped on updating lately).

Thanks @benwerd! If you have any feedback on the product, we're always interested.

For all the designers out there, I just tweeted some tips for designing Slack apps that I learned while working on this project: https://twitter.com/kowitz/statu... The overarching lesson for me was that the Slack interface is *very* constrained, and it takes a good amount of experimenting with designs, and iterating with developers, to deliver a good user experience. So much of what I thought would work, didn't feel right when we tried it, or couldn't be implemented with the API (even though we thought at first it would work).

😻 Range is FREE till the end of the year for the first 100 teams who sign up with the referral code: “PRODUCTHUNT”. Enjoy! ——— Hello! I’m a co-founder and head of product here at Range. The team has been working incredibly hard to launch this new Range app for Slack. If you’re already using Range and Slack, this will be a huge upgrade to your workflow. If you’re new to Range, it’s the best way to keep your team connected while everyone’s working remote. Range lets you run daily Check-ins with your team, it connects up to all your tools to make writing a Check-in super easy, and it has team questions that make Check-ins actually fun! I know there’s a lot of makers in this community, so here’s a detailed rundown of all the Slack features that I’m particularly excited about today: 👍 Easy setup — You can now Sign in to Range with your Slack account, invite your team, and be ready to go in minutes. We’ll guide you through every step. ✅ Check-ins from Slack — We creatively used the Slack modal API to build an excellent Check-in experience right from Slack. You can even search for activity from connected integrations like GitHub, Jira, etc. 💬 Comments — This might be my favorite. You can now easily reply to Range comments in Slack. You can even see the whole thread for context. 🤓 Slash commands — We added a bunch of Slash commands. “/checkin” lets you check in to Range from anywhere. There’s also some fun commands like “/range timezones”. Type “/range help” to see them all. 🧵 Notification threading — Some teams really want to keep their team channel tidy, so you can choose to have one Check-in thread per day. 🔖 Remember tasks — When someone asks you to do something in Slack, you can now click the [...] button on the message and choose “Add to my plan” in Range. 🏠 Slack App Home — Click on “Range” in your Slack sidebar, and you’ll be able to see up-to-date lists of who’s checked-in on your teams. 🚩 Bonus notifications — We also send messages to the team Slack channel for relevant info like Meeting notes, Objective updates, and Flags. Phew, that’s a lot! I hope you and your team check out Range and our new Slack app. We’re always working to make Range better, but the only way we can do that is through feedback from customers. So please do let us know what you think! Cheers!

I love the spinner tool for making sure the person with the strongest wifi doesn't get the loudest voice
Michael Boykin
@ekp 😂 So true! That and it (the spinner) helps us overcome the struggle of figuring out who should go first with just about every discussion topic. Thanks for helping us share this product with the world!

Every day at Range we get to learn from the thoughtful and hardworking teams that use Range. And what we’ve heard over and over again is that they spend a lot of time in Slack. We knew that taking our Slack app to the next level was an important step for our product, and I’m really excited to share it with our teams today. And we can’t wait to keep learning—please share what you like, dislike, or wish our app did. We’ll be here taking notes and continuing to improve. 😸

love love the mood icons, and the deep Slack integration makes it all so much more convenient
Braden Kowitz
@mbasnage I really like the mood icons too! I'm curious, did you team use the older version without the red/yellow/green colors? I'm curious if adding the colors has been helpful for teams.
Mark Basnage
@kowitz yes, super helpful for us, a wonderful at-a-glance check. In our case, we had a culture of checking in with colors (based on the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence / Marc Brackett's RULER work, which uses four colors) so the ability to bring this into Slack/Range at a glance has been terrific. Thanks for asking.

Yay, go team Range! Our team started using the daily check-ins as a way to remotely conduct our "stand-ups," and that feature plus the mood check-ins have helped us passively share our priorities and well beings. We've become a more connected team while being physically apart.

Loving the new app experience in Slack. It really helps our team stay in lock step! I highly recommend if you use Slack!
Nunzio Martinello
I love the mood check features!
Cornell Lenair Martin
@nunziomartinello Ditto! It's such a great way to encourage openness and trust on the team.

I'm really proud of the team's work on this launch. There are a lot of visible changes, but even more under the hood. Range's first integration with Slack was built 3 years ago and used the RTC event stream and course permissions. Since then Slack have made considerable improvements to the API, introducing granular permissions and encouraging the use of the REST API and various webhooks for events and interactions. Making these kinds of changes are like changing the wheels on a moving train, and require considerable choreography. We hope you enjoy the improvements and if you're working with the Slack API our team would be happy to chat about our experiences.

@stephyeung from our team just posted a few developer tips for how to build Range apps. They're focused on supporting user interactions, which is tricker than on other platforms. 👉 https://twitter.com/stephyeung/s...

I've been using Range with my teams for more than a year and it is notable the most engaged groups are ones that use the tool. It is simple and powerful. We can connect decisions we had in meetings with all action items automatically distributed and linked to assignees decided on the meeting as well as link it up to our goals and objectives. As a manager, I see this tool as being a great catalyzer and definitely fundamental to create more capacity. I strongly recommend it.
Michael Boykin
@emanuel_de_souza Thanks so much for sharing your experience with Range, Manny! Hope your team is enjoying this update.
Luis Gomez
A good way to know what your teammates are up to!
Michael Boykin
@luis_gomez6 Couldn't agree more, and I especially love the new way the Slack app handles comments and replies on Check-in items. Never miss a thing. Thanks for using the product, Luis!
Andrew Laskevych
Exciting ;) Good luck!
Gulak Oleksandr

Alec Huth
Seems super cool!!
Michael Boykin
@alec_huth If you have any feedback for us, do let us know. Thanks!
Adrian Sebastian Volcinschi Moros
Looks like it is pretty easy to use, i am going to propose it to my CTO for some better management!
Michael Boykin
@adrian_volcinschi Thanks! Would love to know what your team thinks after, and do let us know if you have any questions.
Robert Brown
I think being able to monitor performance and task distributions across the team is going to be more important than ever as it looks like remote work is here to stay. Love the mood feature to get a quick glance of everyone’s status. What motivated you guys to build this?
Dan Pupius
@robertb Thanks Robert! We've always had the philosophy of meeting people where they are. People spend so much time in Slack these days, and we heard from customers that they wanted Range more closely integrated into that workflow. Tip: encourage people to fill out their Range profiles then try `/range whois @robert` :)
Shivani Shah
This sounds really great! I will definitely be implementing this into my team work environments.
Michael Boykin
@shivani_shah3 Great to hear that! Once you and your team have had a chance to explore Range, do let us know what you think.
Arielle Ghiloni
I love the team building question and emoji portion Braden!! This is such a great way to get people excited and motivated to work!
Michael Boykin
@arielleghi_ And such a great way to keep pulse on team morale. Thanks to you and your team for using Range!
