TLDR: Strength, quick versioning for multiple formats; weakness, few color palettes, templates in some categories. Used Relay early on. Liking the progress they have made. If you are a heavy Canva user for blog, social post graphics, or paid social graphics, try Relay to see if it saves you time + gives you better results for the platforms you need. Versioning for multiple formats in Relay is faster (and better) than in other apps. The UX needs polishing but has improved. The color palette selections are limited; plan to outsource that for now. Some categories have limited templates. Promising. Best feature? Warns me of FB ads have too much copy.
@kkdub Thanks for the feedback. I would agree that we are continuing to develop out new layouts every few days to fill out the gaps for all platforms. One of the challenges that we run into is that platforms keep changing their specs. In fact, as I'm writing this Facebook is getting ready for an all new header update. Might take a little time to catch up. We've been also doing some research on the theme library and growing out the ones that convert the best. Most of our users want to add their own brand colors but for those that want quick inspiration we look forward to evolving that area too. We feel fortunate to have you as a user and look forward to growing with your brand.
It's been fun watching @CraigCarpenter and @ZengVictor build RELAY. They set out to make producing professional-grade graphics for social media as easy as generating a meme, and they nailed it.
RELAY is a killer app for any business or organization that needs to engage customers, stakeholders, etc. on social media. In a few clicks, RELAY turns a line of copy and an image into a kaleidoscope of ready to use graphics—all perfectly formatted for the major social media platforms.
RELAY is a huge time saver for social media pros and a lifeline for social media noobs. They’ve made the content creation process so fast and so easy, anyone can do effective inbound marketing.
If you’ve wanted to up your game on social media, but didn’t think you had the time or graphic design skills—think again!
Received spam from these guys asking me to come and comment on their PH post. They have the PH logo on the front page of their site, but as far as I can see they're not even on the front page of PH/tech yet.
@rossdcurrie: In Relay's defense, they didn't coerce anyone to comment on this page. The exact text of their email (that I got) was:
Wow! We were just discovered on Product Hunt this morning! If you haven’t heard, ProductHunt.com introduces the latest apps and technology products to a ton of savvy visitors.
We’re hosting an “Ask Us Anything” session on the RELAY Product Hunt page and invite you to see all of the new layouts and updates we’ve made.
We look forward to your questions and comments.
Thanks!
Craig Carpenter

Technically PH frowns upon trying to encourage upvotes, etc., but I took this to be enthusiasm on Relay's part. If they had pointedly said "Go to the PH page and vote for us, comment, etc." then I would've felt they were definitely being too forceful.
@brandonuttley Fair point, though I believe it's the first e-mail they've ever sent me - I'd honestly forgotten I'd even signed up for the service, so this just seemed like straight out spam. Unfortunately I seem to be getting more and more people sending e-mails like this one which are targeting Product Hunt users.
Perhaps a lesson to be learnt here about user engagement - don't ignore your users for months and then send them an e-mail asking them to do something.
@rossdcurrie@brandonuttley Thanks Brandon and Ross. We were indeed excited to be hunted and it is true that we don't send our users a lot of emails. In an effort to NOT annoy our subscribers it seems that we have in this case and it wasn't our intention. I sent a personal email to you Ross to hopefully clear it up and look forward to being a part of the discussion today. If we aren't allowed to use the logo then we're happy to change our page. We were very intentional about not asking for comments or upvotes because we want to be part of this great community... not add to the noise. Thanks again.
@craigcarpenter Not sure if there are usage guidelines around the logo, I was more pointing out the fact that you're not really "hunted" until you're featured on the front page (or the tech section) of ProductHunt. Right now you're essentially in the public queue for submitted projects.
I've been using Relay since January/February and it literally changed my life. It now takes a few minutes to deign social media graphics that use to take hours. Can't speak highly enough about this product.
Thanks @jessabahr We've enjoyed seeing the graphics you create and I would agree that the focus of our product is all about saving time and being more productive. Through is some professional looking graphics to the mix and we think the results can be pretty impressive in most cases.
I heard of RELAY a long time ago but just became a paying customer within the last week. It has been one of a handful of products that I had been waiting patiently to "need" so that I could finally give it a try. I think they've done a great job making it dead simple to create promotional graphics that are nice to look at.
Frankly, I'm surprised at the low number of upvotes. I wonder if that's because a search for "relay" from the PH home page turns up everything BUT this RELAY. Pretty frustrating results when you're searching for something you KNOW is here. I had to go find the founder's profile and get to this listing from there. (Why is that @rrhoover?)
Like @rossdcurrie, I too got an email from RELAY about them being on PH. I could tell they were being really careful not to ask for upvotes - heck - they didn't even put a link in the email to this page!
Anyway, great job @CraigCarpenter. I look forward to seeing where RELAY goes from here.
@nichediver@rrhoover@rossdcurrie Thanks for the shout out Brandi! I was certain we'd spark a lot of conversation but no one can seem to find us. I was recommended not to link directly to this page so I sent everyone to the PH homepage.
In all honesty, I'm a little concerned we're going to miss an opportunity here to chat about what we've been up to. I love geeking out about design, branding and tech but it seems a somewhat dead here for sure. Hoping it gets sorted out and thanks again for the kudos and support!
"no one can seem to find us"
Basically it's because your site hasn't been hunted. It's been submitted to the public queue by someone with comment access.
I wrote a Reddit comment the other day that kind of sums it up.
Huge fan of Relay. Personally I'm terrible at making images and typically have to wait for a team member to create something for me. Now with Relay I no longer have to wait, I can do it myself. Had an image this weekend I made using their app on the fly and it was shared by hundreds. Had I not used their tool it never would happen. Super easy to use and the team is incredible. Highly recommend. Great job guys!
Hey everyone and thanks for hunting us @gsie! I'm Craig, one of the co-founders of RELAY - a web-based productivity tool in which "Graphics Design Themselves."
What a journey this has been to bring this to life! It started as a germ of an idea born out of personal frustrations of needing to create graphics for every social channel during a podcast I had launched. I was interviewing startups, entrepreneurs, and crowdfunding enthusiasts and even though I had a 3D animation and design background, constantly making and resizing graphics didn't seem very productive.
At first, I presold lifetime memberships to several beta testers that helped us refine the tools they most wanted. As the RELAY community grew I was able to refine the product with the help of my talented co-founder Victor and build the features that mattered most to users. I think Graham did a great job in explaining what we do and I'm looking forward to answering any additional questions here.
Thanks for the support today! We've also created a discount page at https://relaythat.com/producthunt to give $20 off to any Product Hunt user. We look forward to seeing what you create!
Product Hunt aside, I've been a huge fan of Relay for quite some time. This goes back to January when they were still taking their first steps. @CraigCarpenter has come a LONNGG way and the product, impressive in it's infancy, has taken giant leaps forward to the point where I recommend my clients to use it, as well as my own team.
As a Digital Marketing Agency, I Can't stress enough how important Graphic Content is for any business trying to make their mark online, and with Relay it empowers those who aren't artistic or gifted - it even takes out the drag and drop guess work that some other programs out there allow you to do, by giving you highly optimised, layouts that you know will work.
Fun Story (Case Study)
My agency runs FB Ads like mad (over 1k ads a week), and out of pure curiousity, I decided to run a A/B Split Test.
1 Campaign of $200 Ad Spend with 10 Non-Relay Graphics
1 Campaign of $200 Ad Spend with 10 Relay Graphics made using their layout suggestions
After a week the Relay Campaign outperformed the first campaign significantly, I saw a CTR of 5.8% while the other was 2.2%, CPC was about 60 cents lower, and the Relevance Score was a 9 compared to the latter which was a 7.
Take it for what it's worth, but people who know me, know that I don't give my stamp of approval without testing the product to see what it's made of. Relay is the future.
