Our low code app builder combines the ease of drag-and-drop visual components with APIs, logic, and escape hatches so developers can custom code whatever they need. Now with self-serve plans that you can deploy on your own private network.
Hello Product Hunt!
@dvdhsu, @hirday_gupta, @andrew_spencer, @kevin_garcia1, @purisid and I have been building an exciting new update for Retool, a low code app platform made for developers to build internal apps, fast.
Until now only our enterprise customers had access to self-hosted Retool. Today we are excited to launch a self-hosted Retool option to all users. Now even a 1-person startup can self-host Retool without talking to anyone.
There’s a lot of reasons why you might want to self-host Retool:
- You work in heavily regulated industries, like financial services or healthcare
- You can only access sensitive data from your private network
- You prefer to host software in your own VPC or locally
No matter your reason, we’re excited to see folks try self-hosted Retool, and have done a lot of engineering work to make deployment easy—you can use Docker, Kubernetes, and 1-click deploy on AWS.
We want to know: what do you think and how can this be even more useful for folks who prefer self-hosted software? Thank you!
Thanks @adityavsc! Totally agree, the main goal here is making it possible for any developer to self-serve and get started no matter their infra/security needs.
I'm a Retool customer, and really like the product. But, this launch of a self-hosted option isn't new - they've offered a self-hosted product for at least a year. My guess is this is a marketing response to Tooljet's open source launch. I understand the business driver for this, but it also seems counter to the spirit of this community and as a fan of Retool, just feels like you're better than this.
Hi @tela! Super fair concern. You're right that we've provided the option for Enterprise plan customers to self-host Retool since we were 2 people - more about that here from @dvdhsu: https://retool.com/blog/building.... We're now making it possible for all Retool customers to self-host from day 1. Today's launch reflects lots of eng work into many new updates: a new self-serve payment option for our Free and Startup self-hosted plans, improvements to our self-hosted deployment experience, 1-click AWS deployment and more. We hope this will enable all engineers to try Retool regardless of their infra/data setups. In any case, appreciate your feedback on the launch!
@dvdhsu@cuffejamie Thanks so much for clarifying all of that, and I'm glad to hear this is a strategic direction that Retool is committed to. In particular, the self-serve for self-hosted approach is a welcome improvement. Cheers!
@tela Thanks for the comment! I totally understand that perspective. To add a little detail to Jamie's explanation, when I was applying to Retool I worked at a big company where I never could've tried retool because I couldn't access my data sources. That experience blocked me from using Retool, so at Retool I worked with the team to experiment with a self service version of on prem. Everyone at Retool was so bought into the idea because we've always wanted it to be easy to anyone to deploy Retool. Anyways, thanks for sharing how our timing may have contributed to a potentially different narrative. We'll definitely keep that in mind for future launches.
@andrew_spencer I can absolutely confirm the need. I have a contract running product at a large enterprise where we handle sensitive financial data, and an externally hosted solution wasn't even viable enough for me to raise. It's a smart GTM play that enables land-and-expand. Thanks for the additional context!
Hey folks! One of the makers here - one of the reasons I'm particularly excited about this launch is the amount of work we put in behind the scenes to make this a (hopefully!) joyful dev experience. From our single-command deployment script to the one-click AWS deployment to extensive K8S support, we've made it super easy to install Retool onto your infrastructure. Can't wait for you all to try this out, and as always, looking forward to hearing any and all feedback on these flows!
@hirday_gupta It's been awesome working with you so far on creating the best self-hosted offering! Your bar for customer experience is second to none and has created a great experience for our users. And more to come!
Our team here at Impala have used Retool's self-hosted offering for a little over 1.5 years and it has democratised (I know, buzzword!) building nifty internal tools for everyone working here. Can't recommend it enough!
Hey everyone!
@cuffejamie@hirday_gupta@kevin_garcia1@dvdhsu and I are excited to share self hosted Retool with you!
I'm especially excited for this launch because when I tried to use Retool before joining, I couldn't since my company's data was only accessible inside our network. That blocked me from using Retool, so when I joined I wanted to make it so anyone, regardless of where your data is, could get started on Retool and build useful apps.
Until today, if your data was only accessible inside your network, you couldn't try out Retool without getting our help deploying. Now, you can deploy Retool in your own environment in just a few minutes.
Please reach out to our team if you have any feedback or would like any help getting started!
One major benefit in this offering is making it easier for developers to fit into IT, security and compliance practices while still selecting tools that help them move fast. Being able to connect to you live data fast and securely i tantamount for building successful POCs that align business and eng stakeholders around what to build and how to deliver fast.
I've wanted a tool like retool since I started working in 2013, but I was never able to fully wrap my head around what it would be or how it would work.
I went from 0 experience in front end and only analytical experience in backend to developing entire tools that my team uses every day.

@matthew_abt Hey! Right now Retool is pretty focused on making it really easy to make internal tools. We shine on use cases that involve internal users writing to databases and APIs. We offer a feature to have public apps that aren't authenticated, but these are often used for dashboards or public uploads, not full websites. External applications is in our long term vision, but we're going to focus on internal tools for the foreseeable future.
@matthew_abt curious to hear more about your use case? We do have a number of customers using Retool for semi-external use cases like partner portals, outsourced data enrichment, managing contractors, etc
