Roll is a powerful AI platform that lets you record studio quality remote video calls, add special effects, and edit and publish in minutes - with just your phone. Learn more at www.roll.ai
Hello Product Hunt Community!
We’re excited to announce the official launch of Roll, an AI-powered video production platform that allows anyone to create professional, studio-quality remote videos in minutes, with just an iPhone.
Roll pairs iPhone camera sensors with large AI models in the cloud to turn an iPhone into a professional video production studio.
We use Generative AI to recreate the room in 3D in the cloud where it can move a virtual camera around - to give users pro image quality with bokeh, multicam shots, motion graphics, and AI-simulated sliders, dollies, and jibs - all with just an iPhone.
We want to democratize high-end video production and make it easy for anyone to create high-quality videos with equipment you already have at home - your phone. Typically, high budget shoots require studios, crews, and multiple cameras and equipment to get the image quality, multi-camera angles, and cinematic camera movements like pan/dolly seen in broadcast television shows, easily costing $10-50k per day. Roll gives you broadcast quality production without any need for studio or equipment, and at a fraction of the cost and time to produce.
Using the latest in cloud computing and AI technologies, we automatically produce a final edited video for you, effectively removing the need for editing entirely and giving you a publish-ready video in minutes.
We are fundamentally improving and automating the entire process - we can get you from recording to publishing in 15 minutes. We’re excited to get this out to you all to see what incredible videos you all will make with it.
Try it out and let us know what you think!
This is really cool — love the multiple camera shots! Two questions:
1. Are you worried that Apple could just add these capabilities to iOS?
2. What minimum iPhone generation is supported?

Thanks for checking it out @chrismessina.
We support any phone that apple is supporting iOS 16 for.
That is iPhone 8 (2017) onwards.
You need iPhone 11 Pro (2019) for Multicam since that is the first generation that had a tele lens. The important innovation and insight here is larger AI models running in cloud. Not very device dependent. In fact iPhone 11 Pro becomes a video production powerhouse with Roll and it is available for 390 $
Here is a video with dolly crane effects done with just 11 pro

Here is a montage with 11 pro footage mixed with 13 pro footage. Hopefully you can’t see the difference.

I can’t promise what Apple will do or not :). I have partnered closely with them at Box and we have had some in depth discussions with their camera teams at Roll.
Apple has a clear preference for doing processing on device, over the cloud. And they are great at it. The problem that Roll is solving - remote production - inherently requires content to be in a central place in the cloud to process. Remote production requires the host to have access to high quality videos that are being recorded by multiple different iPhones in different locations. To collect them all on a single user’s phone and then process them on one phone would take days.
Apple is great with on-device hardware. They do have the resources to create great collaborative cloud saas for creators, but they have not shown the desire for that. Again, it is hard to predict the future. We just make bets on what we know today. :)
We see Apple as long-term partners. The Apple Camera Platform team creates a lot of mindblowing camera platform capabilities (that they know the internal Apple Camera App team is less interested in) and they love showcasing apps who show iPhones used in a Pro way. Our app utilizes all the continued advancements they're making with their cameras/sensors, on-device CPUs, GPUs and neural chips. Roll is set up to get better and better with every iPhone release.
This looks really great, but there seems to be a few teething issues.
- Even when connected with my phone, it detects it as a webcam rather than the rear camera.
- Sending the link to my desktop prompts me to sign in with Google, but I signed up with Apple.
- There doesn’t seem to be a way to delete videos? I hadn’t realised I was recording, tried to delete and it doesn’t seem you can?
@richinapps "Sending the link to my desktop prompts me to sign in with Google, but I signed up with Apple."
Yep! That’s a bug — incorrect link. Sorry about that. For now if you gp to app.roll.ai on Chrome, you’ll be able to sign in with Apple and you will also see an option to join your ongoing mobile call.
@richinapps on deletion We are currently working on a delete feature and expect it to ship next week. In the meantime, feel free to reach out to us at contact@roll.ai with any critical questions/concerns.
@benjamin_powell we are adding support for recording with webcams soon. The iPhone will still be the highest quality. Sadly there is a hardware limit on what is possible with webcams today.
Hey there- I love this idea of an app. i've been looking at so many similar but this looks like its the best.
the one question i have is if we wanted to use an external microphone, how can we record the audio with more than just the iphone microphones?
thanks so much
Today, we record audio from the iPhone. We are currently working on enabling a secondary audio track from external microphones connected to laptops, and hope to release this feature soon.
Oh, I think I also came across you on Linkedin today! How would you recommend using Roll - social media, customer interviews, email snippets, or something else?
@simran_handa_sequin awesome to hear! We recommend using Roll for any videos where you really care about high quality production - videos that represent you and/or your company/brand and plan to use as long-lived marketing assets on YouTube, Vimeo, social media channels, etc. For example, video podcasts, executive interviews, customer testimonials, webinars, fireside chats, virtual conferences, and more - anywhere where you’d hire a professional video production company or invest in really high-end camera equipment to produce professional videos.
@felixkaiser - thanks for the feedback! Our app does work with non-Pro phones with single rear cameras. To use our pro mode with back cameras (which is required for VFX pan/dolly/crane effects), you need to make sure that the app is connected to the back camera through the Roll app (so you see the feed in your Roll call on your laptop browser) and not Apple continuity camera which uses the Apple camera app. You can also record in our Selfie mode using the front cameras, which will still give you fantastic quality, but wont be able to get VFX.
Wow, this is such a cool project. Roll makes video creation so much fun and simple. The AI camera shots and motions are stunning, and the quality is top-notch. I can’t wait to see what you do next!
