Routine (YC W21) is a productivity desktop & mobile app that helps you take back control of your time. πΎ Centralize all your tasks (email, chat, project management) π Plan your work (schedule, postpone, block time) π― Focus on what matters today
Congrats on the launch! But I'm experiencing a huge bug right now that's not letting me schedule tasks within the calendar. I keep getting a pesky "FATAL ERROR: No Primary Calendar". Anyone else dealing with this? Been waiting a long time to switch to this calendar officially and just can't until it's usuable.
Hey! π
I am Julien, one of the cofounder at Routine.
We've been hard at work for the past year, building the next generation of productivity app for professionals.
Routine is centered around time management (calendar) but does not stop there. It also combines task management, notes taking and contacts management.
Just to name a few, those are the features our users love the most:
1. Global keyboard shortcut to capture your ideas & thoughts and create tasks & events
2. Planner combining events and tasks of the week
3. Drag & drop to block time for your most important tasks
4. Postpone tasks to a later week for reconsideration (week-based todo lists)
5. Integrations (e.g Notion) to bring all your tasks in a single workspace
6. Schedule meetings, join conference calls with a keyboard shortcut and take meeting notes
We are still in private beta but invitations are now sent more regularly as the product is a lot more mature than a year ago.
In any case, let us know what you think, we definitely need your feedback to take Routine to the next level π.
@jmq@matthew_foley I'm wondering the same. By inviting two colleagues, my slot should have been bumped up quite a bit on the waitlist. Unfortunately, it hasn't. Good marketing, but I'd love to see some actionable results.
@alexander_chau The main difference is that we organize tasks per week through a Postpone feature that allows you to put a task in a later week for reconsideration. Other than that, you get to see your tasks next to your calendar and block time through drag & drop which I believe is similar. Routine goes further with the global keyboard shortcut, the natural language, the meeting notes etc.
I believe you need a task manager like Todoist to do the heavy lifting and connect it to Sunsama where you do the planning. With Routine, you have everything in a single tool: calendars, tasks, notes and contacs.
Hi @matthew_foley. Very sorry about that. I just checked and it seems you signed up on the 17th of June this year. Maybe you signed up with another email address before and did not indicate if you were using macOS and Google Calendar. Without this information, we can't know if you are ready to use Routine and we favor the users who specified their platform/service. In any case, I just sent you an invite.
Daily user here for almost 2 years π Cant' go back to my last setup which was a combo of slack reminders, to-do lists and Google Calendar. With the upcoming releases I even think to reduce my things in Notion (or increase it thanks the API ? hell yeah)
I am using Routine since a year now. Very impressed by the team and the weekly delivery. Great and beautiful product that help me to organize myself and be focus. everyday.
Clean product, simple and useful design. Working perfectly on my Mac and iPhone setup.
Congratulation to @jmq and @mefyl! Keep going guys.

Congratulation on the launch. The product looks impressive, as some of the other recent entries like Daybridge and Amie in the similar space turned out to be long-listed waitlists where signing up and waiting for the product to get you on board is impossible. Without using any of these videos or screenshots, they are also meaningless, as only investors can get excited by that, not users! I understand that the product making process is lengthy, but end users should not get involved in between these if you don't have a plan to release a product in 1-3 months max. Rather than signing up on a waitlist, you can ask for emails to be notified when the product is ready to onboard regular users. This waitlist drama was started by MAILBOX in 2013 and is still getting misused by many.
I understand the frustration @nilsej. If we did not use a waiting list, everybody would use the product at the same time, the experience would likely be bad because we are still building it and we would not learn as much. Also a lot of users are on Windows or do not use Google Calendar. Letting them use the product is pointless since it is not ready for their platform/provider yet.
With the waiting list, you subscribe and we will let you know, as you said, when the product is ready for you.
You are getting in a niche with a lot of demand and a lot of competition. The modern-day person is and should be all about maximazing their time, so congrats on the launch of a product helping do this in the best way possible.
I've been invited to the private beta. Let me tell you: this is already a stellar product. In term of craft it's already going close to Things 3. But Routine beats Things on the actual workflows you use on a daily basis.
Generally we face this challenge: should we let users do whatever they want (ex: Notion); or should we suggest a more rigid structure to help them ? (ex: Things). In my opinion, Routine found the sweet spot.
I've been switching between my tasks and my calendar for so long. Currently I use Things 3, and I have tried Motion and Reclaim.ai. They are pretty good, but what make Routine even better to me : changing how we relate to our "legos". These legos are events, tasks, and notes.
This is where it shines to me: every type of lego share the same structure you can add info into it.
- For instance I can prepare my agenda for my next meeting within my calendar events. No need to open Notion or a note app. It's all in there.
- I can link a random task to an existing note.
I feel that I can play easily with every component (event, task, note) with the right flexibility.
What I love so far:
- Natural language to create stuff really fast (Superhuman like)
- Week view planner with a mix of events, scheduled tasks AND backlog of tasks within that day
Generally, it feels at last I've found a tool that works with the way my mind works.
Congrats to the team, you've nailed something
@e_fex Thanks a lot for the kind words. I hope we will not disappoint :) This is really just the beginning. We will continue working hard to build the productivity app of your dream.
The unique combi of tasks & calendar events really set this app apart. It allows planning a working day that is realistic and goal-focused.
Team really knows how to execute and is very responsive to feedback requests. Keep it up!
As a CEO of a growing tech company, I have to manage my time and tasks wisely. My only job is to take care of my employees and my customers. Making sure that my team can do their job in their best conditions. Routine is my day-to-day product helping me succeed in that journey. I highly recommend anyone with busy days give it a shot to Routine. The team behind it is eager for feedback and devoted to making its product the best in the space. Congrats on what you are doing, and thank you for providing such a great product to me (us).
At first I thought that you have another calendar, and there are many of them, but then I decided that in fact each person suits something different, a different interface, design and so on. Therefore I wish you luck, I am sure that this is a painstaking work.
@jmq Very excited to check this out! I've already invited two colleagues so hopefully that gets me in the saddle sooner rather than later! Congrats!
Edit: Nearly a month later and I get an email that it's another three months on the waiting list... π€·ββοΈ
No disrespect to the team behind this, but I'll likely forget what Routine was by time I can get a chance to check it out properly.
@britt_joiner If you have macOS & Google Calendar, you should get an invite within 2-3 weeks. Check the verification email, it contains a link to your email preferences that will also display your position on the waiting list. Let me know if there is an issue at julien@routine.co. Thanks
Routine is a great product and has done a great job at differentiating itself from the other apps in this category.
Their design is clean; the implementation of quick add and quick overview is best in class, and they have put out a well thought mobile app with just the right features.
Congrats on the launch! I highly recommend folks to join the community (https://base.routine.co/community).
Routine is a great app that has changed the way I organize my days, with a much better focus. I feel like I control my schedule like crazy ahah
I could see the latest big improvements on the product. Congratulations to the team and keep it up!
