Interesting idea but, how do you know if the fragrance and scents you like match the smell and receptiveness of your skin? The combination of a fragrance + your skin = how good you smell right? ;)
@bramk Hey Bram you're 100% correct. Actually this is a big reason why it is so important to try the ingredients on your skin - because everyone will have a different reaction. In fact, when you get the kit, you'll see that each scent is in a roller vial, so you are forced to put it on your skin :)
"Scent Trunk 1.0 was a subscription sampling service, where we curated fragrances from other brands and shipped them monthly for $18.
Scent Trunk 2.0, we've actually got our own lab where we are creating our own formulas. We've invented a kit that figures out what people like to smell and then personalize it end to end."
Interesting idea on building the kit. Can we also suggest that I like a specific perfume with specific strength. Also few environment/people are allergic to perfume. Is there any perfume for people who've allergy to regular perfumes ?
@haseeb Yes you can always reach out to our customer success team about additional preferences or allergies. They'll transfer this information to our lab :)
I just received my test kit and I have to say that I'm pretty pumped!! I tried out Scent Bird for a little while but the fragrances were pretty much hit or miss so I do like the fact that Scent Trunk 2.0 is all about making personalized fragrances based on the 6 basic scents (I think my favorite so far is citrus). The team behind this seems extremely capable and I'm excited to see where this goes! Hats off to you Scent Trunk team.
@irvingtorresyc Thanks for the kind words and excited that you're enjoying the kit. Looking forward to sending you a fragrance and getting your thoughts on that!
@brianmback I have a mining engineering degree so believe me, I didn't learn in school. We actually have an amazing perfumer on our team, Sarah McCartney. She's award winning and super creative. Without her experience none of this would be possible!
@cesarzeppini Interesting... we've had some brands reach out looking for exclusive formulas but we've never thought about doing it for consumers. Actually maybe we could even make exclusive formulas for influencers, what do you think?
@ata_aman Hey Aman!
The Scent Test Kit is free + $4.95 shipping.
The monthly subscription is $11.99, free shipping.
If you don't like the scent we make for you, we'll try again for free :)
@hialexlam Hey Alex, actually from your account you can always "request a new fragrance" and we will make something new. That way it never gets boring. Some of our customers actually change up their fragrance every month :)
@jcampbell_05 Good idea - we want were thinking of having a service where you could surprise your girlfriend and the kit would be shipped to them. Thanks for the suggestion!
@carlosarbona Thanks Carlos! Yes we found that people who found a scent they loved, wanted to see it (or should I say smell it) in other products. Scent also has a really big impact on how people feel, so we think there's going to be some interesting things we'll be able to do with this data :)
@olilem5 Yes we will be personalizing all sorts of personal care products like soaps, shampoos etc. We've even thought about doing scented spaces as we get more data on what different types of people like to smell :)
@hialexlam@sam_marcus_n Hey Alex sorry but we don't ship to Canada at the moment. We hope to expand soon though - so if you sign up for our mailing list you will be the first to know :)
Really interesting idea, and I love the way data analytics could be used further down the road for other products! I know brand is such an important part of why people buy fragrances, so how are you convincing customers to choose a personalized scent rather than a designer brand?
@greg_miller Great question, brand is super important - and it's something we're investing a lot in. We're building a brand around being an individual. In fact a big part of brand is breaking the gender stereotypes that have existed in fragrance. We don't have "men's" or "women's" fragrances, we just make something that's "you" (because we know what you like to smell).
I received my scent test kit a couple days ago, and must say I'm loving the process so far! The way that Scent Trunk puts you in the driver's seat with their build your own fragrance model is a really refreshing twist on subscription product services. One question for the team, is there a way for me to see what scents my friends currently have? Or recommend my current scent to a friend?
@ianhansborough You can't see what scents your friends have but maybe we can allow people to share their Scent Test results with friends. We've found that people are always surprised to find out that a scent they love - their friend may just hate!
@william_yin That could definitely be a good add on! If nothing else it would be interesting to compare those sort of differences with my friends. It could also be a point of conversation when I'm sharing it with my friends/family
@trey_hakanson Thanks for the kind words! We developed a kit where you actually smell things, before we deliver your personal scent - after a bunch of testing we just found that this is more accurate (and fun). We also develop our own fragrances rather than delivering brands that are already on the market!
@trey_hakanson awesome, makes sense to me! Having a true in-home test seems like the best and least pressure way to learn what you like. Keep up the good work!
@eman Thanks for the question!
Before launching 2.0 we were in beta for 18 months where we were shipping sets of 3 fragrances to people and getting them to rate them. We knew all the attributes of the scents we were sending of course. After a bunch of data we were able to determine the ingredients that are both polarizing from person to person - and a significant component of a fragrance formulation. Designing this was really challenging because there is both the software component and physical formulation (mixing of chemicals).
Still a work in progress though, as we get more data we will continue to get better and better! :)
@william_yin sounds dope 👌. If we get the personalized scent and want to add more of a specific fragrance to the mix without starting the whole process over are we allowed to?
Hey @william_yin and crew - well done! I love the idea and have attempted to make my own fragrances in the past because I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for in other brands. One important thing for me is the combination of great smells and ingredients that are natural & essential oil based. I would love know about your ingredients. Looking forward to my custom fragrance and thanks for the awesome idea!
@natmaas Thanks for the kind words! We do use organics in our fragrances because they also add a unique scent to each of our formulas. However our fragrances are not 100% organic - it's hard to do this with fragrances because you can't keep the smell consistent (and good!).
Thank you Nichole for the hunt!
I’m Will, CEO at Scent Trunk. We use data to design custom fragrances – and ship them directly to you each month. We developed a Scent Test Kit, with 6 basic scent formulas, that our new members start with, to help us identify the types of smells they gravitate towards - our lab then uses this to send them their perfect fragrance. If we get it wrong, we’ll try again – for free.
But fragrance is just the tip of the iceberg for us. We’re collecting a bunch of data on what people like to smell and we plan on using this to make better soaps, bath and body products etc.
Ask us anything! We’re also looking for feedback!
Thanks
