Screenie 2 is a new type of screenshot manager designed specifically for macOS Catalina. With Screenie, you can drag screenshots from your menubar, preview and drag images from the Screenie Panel, and even search the text inside your screenshots!
I just use Evernote for that. I wish iOS could auto-import iPhone screenshots into Evernote the way it does in MacOS. Although Google Photos will search for text within screenshots as well, and those get auto-uploaded with their iOS app.
Hi Product Hunt!
Back in 2016 we posted the first version of Screenie for the community here and we were beyond excited to see all the positive feedback and to learn from the constructive criticism. Now it's 2020 🤯and we're ready to share something new.
Screenie 2 is a completely re-imagined app with a new sleek user interface and major stability and performance improvements. Most importantly though, Screenie 2 is the first app using optical character recognition technology available only in macOS Catalina to enable you to search the text inside your screenshots!
Some other great features:
- Change the location where macOS saves your screenshots
- Bring up the Screenie Panel from a global keyboard shortcut
- Option to disable the native macOS screenshot previewer in the bottom right corner
- New theme and styling options
As a special thank you to the community here we're happy to give all Product Hunt users 50% off when using the discount code GOLDENKITTY at checkout!
@sond813 Hello Noah, if I'm buying screenie will it last for forever? I mean for future versions? or the current version forever? Or if somehow the screenie got uninstalled will I have to pay again for it?
@sond813 Am I missing something, or is the app free to download right now...? I'm confused because if it's free, what's the discount code for? I just downloaded it and waiting for it to index my screenshots in order to try it out! There don't appear to be any in-app purchases though and it didn't mention a trial or anything 😅
@sond813 :privacy policies? Do you collect data and store them, do you read see the screenshots and use them in any way? Does your OCR keep records and save the data somewhere because many screenshot can have bank info or other personal informations. Could you provide detailed info about how you handle all this information?
@sgorajek We don’t have a built in editing feature yet, but you can easily open screenshots in Preview from the Screenie panel and edit there. If there’s another use case that would work better for you let us know!
Bought this - extremely helpful. Congrats!
One complaint I have (and maybe it's something I'm missing) is that I can only choose one folder at a time, and that can't be my "MacBook Pro" drive itself as it won't look for anything. In other words, I have images in Documents, Downloads, Desktop, folders within Desktop, and say I choose "Desktop", it won't include images that I have within folders on my desktop - only the ones flat out on the desktop itself. Is there any way around this?
@prithsr@sond813 I'm also really looking forward to this! I have subfolders that need to be included in indexing. Can you please tell when this is about to be released into production?
@niklaspivic666 Doesn't work well for me. I have added around 3-4 folders and though screenie itself shows a bunch of pictures more, the search feature doesn't include all of them.
@prithsr It works for me, actually. I selected a folder that contains subfolders, then went to Advanced > Clear cached data. I also use 'Fast' as method for allowing the app to index my pics, which uses a LOT of CPU at first, but then calms down significantly.
Question: There is a lot of bug in there i think. So, after download, the app neither sticks in the dock nor in the menu bar, you have to launch it all the time to use it . Also just out of curiosity I took the settings gear icon off in the screen setting, there is no way to get it back. Also what is the "Drag screenshots any time from your menubar" but there is no icon in the menu bar. Am I missing something?
@s_k8 Sorry for the confusion! Screenie is designed to not be in the dock, although we do have a preference to enable that if you choose. You can open preferences at anytime by right clicking the menubar icon, and you can open the Screenie panel by left clicking the icon. The menubar icon looks like the outline of a circle. If you're not seeing it please email us and we'll make sure to get the bug fixed!
