@hharrisbrown@ageiger You guys mentioned an API - what use cases are you already thinking about for the API?
Also, what other startups/products in legal do you guys favor in terms of the innovation and potential for the legal vertical?
@hharrisbrown@dshan I'm a big fan of anything that improves transparency and efficiency in the legal industry. There are a number of marketplaces (UpCounsel, PrioriLegal, Lawdingo) making it cheaper/more efficient to find a qualified lawyer, which drives down customer acquisition costs and allows the lawyers to charge less for their services. Clio is a great platform that helps small firms run more efficiently, which has a similar impact on the cost of legal services.
I also love the companies doing cool stuff with data, especially when they do it in an open way. Judicata, Ravelaw, Diligence Engine, and CaseText are all good examples. There's so much rich information in legal documents. Tools that make this information more accessible and actionable represent a huge opportunity to change the way we consume, understand, and practice law. It's not just for big firms either. At the consumer and small business end of the spectrum where we operate, it means aggregating deal terms to show market rates and trends (a la Kelly Blue Book) and triggering reminders about things like due dates, invoice dates, and expiration dates, all things that are clearly defined in contracts (this is something we just started doing with Shake Pro).
There's no shortage of lawyers and no shortage of demand for legal work. Unfortunately the majority of the demand is unmet because the traditional infrastructure is too custom and thus too slow and expensive for the long-tail to access. The lawyers who embrace new technology to service more clients but charge lower fees are the ones who will succeed.
Shake just launched their web app and Premium product. Abe (founder) should jump in here and answer questions about where innovation in legal is at right now!
They're offering 25% off for Product Hunters:)
I think this is super great and solves a real problem. I will use for sure.
What I don't quite understand is the finger or even worse, mouse signing. I am seeing this more and more and honestly I cannot create a decent signature. No way in 5 years am I going to look at some mouse scribble and say "yes, that was me!". Surely there is a better way. Can I store my signature like I do with Apple Preview? Can't we get rid of "signatures" altogether?
@surfy thanks Mark! From the web app (including mobile web) you can type your name rather than drawing it. No stored signatures just yet but it's on the roadmap. What we found from our mobile apps is that a lot of people seem to like signing each time (some for the ceremony of it and others for security).
@nicholassheriff Hi Nicholas, that sounds cool. We haven't opened up our API yet, and this wasn't the first use case we had in mind for when we do, but I would love to know more about what you're envisioning. Shoot me an email if you want to chat about it, abe@shakelaw.com
@surfy also, stay tuned for TouchID. We have a prototype build with proximity based sending via Bluetooth and signing via TouchID. It's pretty sweet. That one does save the signature and applies it with TouchID.
I was looking for an e-signature/document provider for a few months and came across Shake this week. I signed up as soon as I had a chance to work through the template process. Beautiful and functional, and we're thrilled with the service so far, @ageiger!
Thanks @playerize and everyone else for the love so far! We're excited to expand our free offering to the web and offer a premium tier for those who need it. We'd love to hear feedback from the Product Hunt community and happy to nerd out about the opportunities for innovation in the legal industry and/or cross-device document creation :).
We want to be available at the "point of deal" as we call it, no matter where that deal is taking place. For the API we're primarily thinking about marketplaces for goods and services (think Angie's List, Kitchensurfing, Behance, etc.). Kind of like Stripe for contracts. Similar to payment processing, legal agreements are an essential and sensitive element of our most important transactions, but they are a friction point rather than a feature. We want to make that part of the transaction as frictionless as possible so the platforms don't need to worry about it.
Do you have any plans for expanding the template options? If so I could see a huge use for this with a project I'm working on. I'd love to chat more about it some time.
@derekwc1 Thanks, we're constantly expanding our library of templates and also plan to introduce a feature where users can opt to share their forms with our general user base. I'd love to hear more about the type of contract you're looking for, please email me at vinay [at] shakelaw.com.
@derekwc1 Hey Derek, you can see the free template library here, http://www.shakelaw.com/agreements/. Let us know if there's something in particular you're looking for. We definitely take user requests into account when we're planning our new template rollouts.
