@illscience what's the hardest part about prioritizing notifications? Do apps provide any signals, or do they all look the same to Snowball? What indicators or signals in the notifications themselves help you prioritize them? IOW, what's your algorithm look like, without giving away any top secrets?
@chrismessina@illscience well, we start with some intelligent defaults and then start with the obvious stuff on the predictive side: i.e. what's the ratio of notifications received to app opens? this is complicated by the fact that some high value notifications ("leave now to get to your next meeting on time") don't drive an app open. context also matters a lot -- a notification that's relevant at home could be irrelevant or bothersome at work. ultimately users are in control and we err on the side of caution to preserve trust.
@illscience I'm digging it. Great design. Great tutorial.
Any way to make it work on the lock screen? The normal status bar is there when my screen is locked.
@illscience Does this work with Android Wear, too? One of my main complaints is that Android uses wear as an unfiltered dumping ground for notifications instead of taking a more intelligent approach, such as using smart filtering like the kind you see on Snowball. Are we able to use Snowball for Wear notifications instead?
Wow, this is what an android app should be. It leverages the power of the OS's customizability, but has the design and usability that people assume only exists on iOS. Also, permanently hiding the "WiFi Connected" and "17 Apps Updated" has made my life infinitely better!
I was a bit surprised that the status bar changes appearance. Do you see themes in the future?
Also I used your messaging app for a bit last year. Did you sunset that? I think the direction you are heading is great!
@ethosventures thanks so much! we redraw the status bar so it only shows icons for important notifications to reduce the noise.
re: themes - yes, we've definitely talked about customization and how we can pull some of your existing aesthetic choices (i.e. your wallpaper) into snowball in subtle ways.
let me know if you have more feedback!
@illscience - Amazing work - congrats to the entire team on the launch, it's clear a lot of effort went into this. Are you automatically prioritizing any notifications from the beginning, or are they all based on users marking something as important/not?
@bombayhustle We try to start with some smart defaults -- only messaging apps are Important and only those annoying Google Play Updates ("10 of your apps were updated") are hidden ..
@illscience I installed Snowball yesterday and have been playing with it. It looks great! Do we have a way to access some basic controls like mute, vibrate, sound, etc?
This is a huge upgrade to the default Android notification setup. Especially on all the non-Nexus devices. Beautiful work! I can't wait to see this evolve to tame bad notifications and make good notifications even more useful.
