Awesome release from Soylent. I'm disappointed that they included corn syrup as the 2nd largest ingredient though. The rest of the ingredients aren't that great either, with canola oil & maltodextrin in the top #10, and sucralose, Isomaltooligosaccharide syrup, Modified Food Starch and Isomaltulose (an artificial sweetener) all featuring as well.
The key ingredient in here for the future though is Whole Algal Flour; which we can presume is derived from the algae featuring in soylent's drinks, and represent the future of the company (imho), where they can grow algae to replace a lot of our nutritional needs.
Given the ingredients, this isn't something that I'd eat right now, but I know this will be hugely convenient for a large number of people and the smaller form factor vs the drink means that it's just getting more and more convenient.
The cost of food is really interesting. I'm surprised the economics of scale don't work out better here. Or maybe they have a great margin?
I eat incredibly healthy and pay about $10 a day for 3 meals a day. My diet consists of free range eggs (breakfast), organic vegetables from Costco and Hearst Ranch ground beef (free range / 100% grass fed) from Whole Foods or Teton Waters Ranch Sausage (also 100% grass fed) from Costco. I typically make paleo spaghetti, curries or roasted vegetables with sausage.
With Soylent I would be spending $2 x 8 = $16 a day.
@chris_smeder Agree 100%. I eat similar to you also. Disappointed in the main ingredients of their products, very highly processed. I'm better off making/drinking smoothies as meal replacement.
@chris_smeder someone who takes time out of their busy schedule to purchase ingredients and make delicious, home-cooked meals for a cheaper price? Chris, you truly are a unicorn in the tech world.
@nickhumphries@chris_smeder Clif bars aren't a good fit for me. About 40g net carbs. main ingredient is brown rice syrup and the #4 ingredient is cane juice - so it's mostly sugar/carbs.
Cliff bars are more of an energy bar than a protein bar imho;
hence their branding:
"CLIF Bar Energy Bars - Nutrition for sustained energy".
@_jacksmith Nothing wrong with sugar/carbs (there are many misconceptions), but that's a whole other story. Also, people need less protein then they think, unless you are bodybuilding or need to gain weight.
@johncoogan Please make "Protein by Soylent" drink and bar! Woud be great for people wanting to up their caloric intake from protein 🔥. Congrats on the new product!
@rrhoover@jasonkimbc@johncoogan check out Quest Protein bars, which have very low net carbs (like <4g) and no added sugar, with 20g of protein.
A number of their products, such as this flavor: http://www.questnutrition.com/pr...
are flavored with sugar alcohols (erythritol) and 'good' sweeteners such as stevia, which don't affect your blood sugar level (note the reviews on that product from diabetics). Avoid the flavors like 'White Chocolate Raspberry', which are flavored with sucralose, if you're not into 'bad' artificial sweeteners.
They also taste great.
They are also recommended by Tim Chang; the venture capitalist with "the hottest abs in silicon valley" (according to Buzzfeed) : https://www.buzzfeed.com/azafar/...
@jasonkimbc@johncoogan Yes! I love the idea of a Soylent bar, especially given that they're now so consistent with creating vegan products. It's hard to find 100% plant based protein bars that aren't full of junk! @_jacksmith any recommendations on that front?
@_jacksmith@rrhoover@jasonkimbc@johncoogan I've never been a fan of how Quest markets their bars as 2-4 net carb bars. Completely misrepresents what's in the bar and leads you to thinking that the carbs don't count simply because they are accompanied by fiber. That's not how it works. That being said, as a huge fan of protein and carbs Quest macros tend to be pretty solid.
Again this product has the same mindset as the people who wear the same outfit everyday to ease their decision making capabilities. I'd put a gun to my head before eating this crap
Hah I love this, big big soylent fan, my fridge is stocked always. Actually bought some protein bars from another company a few weeks ago, so it's nice to see Soylent responding to market demand. Will def have to pick up a case.

And, for that reason... I'm out.
@pakhzar@johncoogan I'm a huge fan of Soylent's packaging as is. Not sure what value you would bring to such an established company. Would love to hear your thoughts.
@itsthisjustin@johncoogan Absolutely, Justin! We wouldn't actually make any changes to the packaging, as is, we merely act as an aggregate to get better pricing on their ALREADY existing packaging! Similar to how bulk postage API's like Easypost or Shippo work for shipping, we do the same for packaging!
@itsthisjustin@johncoogan Nice! What's your email? We've done packaging for Gilt, Sony Pictures, Chubbies, AT&T, Memebox, Sprig etc. and have a network of 62 MFG across the country with several in Shenzhen.
