Every Monday morning everyone on the Product Hunt team shares their weekly update in Slack in text, posting what they did last week, plan to do this week, blockers, and OOO schedule. This has been very useful for staying up-to-date. We also do a video call once a week for 30 minutes.
I'm not sure asynchronous video updates from something like this is better than text which is easy to scan and reference. Curious to hear your thoughts and any learnings so far building Standups, @jp_pincheira.

@rrhoover Hi Ryan, thanks so much for your comment and upvote. πππΌ
I started Standups.io because doing synchronous standups just didn't work for me within my team. Async standups are being done by a lot of different SaaS apps and chat bots right now and lots of distributed/remote teams are finding it valuable, but I wanted to take it to the next level: adding the ability to see your teammates regularly regardless of their timezone. Probably you can skip this if you're able to coordinate the time of the video call, but that's not the reality for a lots of teams with members ranging from Tokyo, to New Delhi, to California: in these cases it's just hard to coordinate a call at a decent time for everybody.
I feel it is important to see your teammates often, we're usually just associating them to their "chat personas" but adding async video helps them identify theirselves better with the group, which does help a lot to make distributed/remote teams more cohesive and engaged. You're seeing their faces/expressions and listening to their voice more often, which contributes in making a better connection within your team, at least more than just using text (and cool GIFs).
The teams that are using Standups.io so far are really liking it π- maybe your team will too? Give it a try for free and let me know how it works for you. From my experience, teams that are are more "modern" (age + industry is a factor here) are liking it more, as "Stories" is something they are familiar with, and feel more comfortable doing their standups in that way than just chat. ππΌ

@rrhoover@tommoor@corey_gwin@restrex A cool idea could be use a speech to text plug in and then have an icon bottom right of each video to see the transcript of the video update
Very creative, repurposing a consumer paradigm for a business use case. Are you worried about this being a feature more than a standalone "product"? If this gains traction, I'd imagine Slack could build their own very quickly.
Thanks for the idea but price tag is unreasonable considering I everyone has some "stories" app and using a all them is free you wold just need to spend 5 min setup a team wide calendar invite.
I'm JP, founder of Standups.io here.
I resigned from my full-time iOS job last march with the idea of making a web/mobile app for async video standups. I did some traveling (China/Vietnam) while I started to work on the app, but eventually ended up back in Germany, escaping South Asia's rainy season :)
The idea of async video standups started to grow on me since last December when I was in the north of Brazil. I was there for some weeks doing remote work for my employer back in Germany, and I had to get up at 5 AM just to make it for the 10 AM standup back in Hamburg. This didn't feel right. Other team members were going through the same. So that's how it all started. Today I'm finally launching and I'm super excited to get your feedback. I'm a solo founder, so it's been quite of a ride itself, but I'm looking forward to what's next :)
iOS and Android apps are coming in 2-3 weeks. I feel it's important to be able to post your standup update from anywhere, as long as you have an internet connection.
I'd love to hear your feedback (feature requests, bugs, etc) and personal experiences when it comes to team standups and how you guys are running standups with team members that are not on-site / distributed, or maybe as a full-remote team. I'm eager to implement some more features that might help this kind of team setups better. You can try Standups for free here: https://standups.io/register
