App download and usage metrics for pretty much every major mobile app? Kind of crazy right? Most people know that it's really hard to get this data. It's basically impossible to figure out how many downloads or active users an app has, let alone engagement, churn etc. My friends Arjun Lall and Abhinav Agrawal figured out a way using panel data, and now it's available for everyone.
They started a startup called Renzu a few years ago. They've been under the radar for years, and along the way SurveyMonkey was smart enough to pick up the product and team, and now they lead a new business line there: mobile app analytics so you can see usage / download numbers for the top few thousand apps in the App Store. A better App Annie, really.
Pretty handy if you're into new apps and want to stay on top of the latest, if you ask me!

@garrytan might need to dial down expectations..."see usage / download numbers for all apps in the App Store." ProductHunt app didn't make the cut :) along with a handful of others on quick scan
@kaz @garrytan Thanks for the feedback Adam. See my response below to on why certain apps aren't shown. For example, while we love Product Hunt, our data show that there are likely only around 50K monthly users on its native app and thus we haven't included it.

Interesting but how close to reality is this? 135 Million MAU for Facebook seems very low even for the mobile app.
@asatwork Thanks for the question Alexandre. To be precise, this data is for phones (not tablets) in the United States only. Thus the 135 Million MAU for Facebook represents ~75% penetration among all smartphones in the United States. Out of curiosity, what was your expectation in terms of apples to apples comparison MAU numbers?
Just like any data from a sample, these are best estimates of the population. We have tested with our beta customers, which include several VC firms and app publishers who know the exact values of their apps, to ensure that the data is precise to make business decisions.

@agrawal667 thank you for your answer. Given the 1,5 billion MAU worldwide I thought it might be closer to 200 million but as you said it does not include tablets so it seems pretty close then.
@jasonhitchcock Great question Jason. SurveyMonkey Intelligence data comes from a panel of mobile users who have agreed to share their behavior with us. We take the raw data collected from them and apply statistical techniques including combining with publicly available and scraped data to make reliable estimates about the app install and usage patterns of all mobile users in the US.

@agrawal667 @jasonhitchcock Wondering the same: would love to have some transparency or additional indicators to gauge approximated accuracy (confidence score, stat. significance). Concept is great, and look forward to greater transparency.

Why do you require signup to view the free data? I really don't want to set up a SurveyMonkey around before I even know what I'm gonna see. (In my opinion a company that has a nice balance between free/open products and premium products is Moz.com)

@koppelaar For an enterprise product that's letting you gain competitive insight, a signup is really not that much of an ask. Their blog lets you see more w/o signing up if that's critical for you.
How much data is needed before an app is trackable? Just searched for half a dozen or so apps that interest me and none are coming up.
@elliottpoppel Since our data is derived from a sample of smartphone users, an app needs to be reasonably large to be accurately tracked over time. Generally, apps with more than 100K monthly active users will be on our list. Apps not coming up either don't meet that threshold or are too new with some limited exceptions. Our basic philosophy is to include data only when we have high confidence in what we show.
What apps were you searching for and interested in? We might be able to provide more context on why they are not showing up. Thanks for the feedback.
This program appears to be extremely valuable to me in the business field since I think it gives an exceptionally serious preferred standpoint to what is the advance of the stock, since it depends on negative and positive feelings, useful feedback and different sentiments that in a specific part , help both the shopper and the wholesaler of the item.
