This is pretty cool — like a mobile-first Splitwise?
How do you identify the source of transactions? I find that that's one pain point of credit card transactions... it's often hard to tell what an expense or transaction was, especially for Amazon or Shopify orders!
thanks so much @chrismessina !🙂 we built Tandem to be quicker and more convenient than Splitwise -- no manual entry required because Tandem integrates with your cards and pulls in your transactions as they happen (then you choose which to split), and you can also automate the expenses you wish to split. Splitwise still requires expenses to be entered manually after referencing credit card statements or spreadsheets (given their focus is mainly on friends/roommates, this somewhat make sense because they don't have highly recurring, shared expenses like couples do).
In Tandem, you can click into each transaction and see the specific card or account it's coming from, date, amount etc. but to your point you cannot go a level deeper just yet to see what was specifically in that transaction (say a big Amazon or grocery purchase). It is something we are looking into implementing, but candidly hasn't been a huge complaint from our users at this point.

70% of couples in the U.S. move in together before getting married. Expense sharing is their first financial experience together, but there’s no seamless, modern solution to make this easier. Some learnings so far:
✔️If you share > 6 expenses per month with a partner, Tandem is likely a perfect fit for you.
✔️The purpose of the app isn’t to penny pinch your partner for every little expense -- it’s to provide the peace of mind that all your shared finances are tracked in one spot. Many of our couples don’t settle up frequently because they trust everything is accounted for!
✔️Top 5 most split merchants are Amazon, Uber, Trader Joe’s (our users are obsessed with TJ’s, can’t blame them), Whole Foods, and Target.
✔️Since soft launching in the App Store in August, Tandem has helped couples split tens of millions of dollars of expenses.

Love that you are one of the first apps with instant transaction data, what have been some of the biggest surprises you’ve run into since launching?
@jefielding Thanks Jenny! One of the more surprising aspects is the large population of users that choose not to settle frequently. Tandem is mainly a tool to ensure things are equitable and many users opt to let the ledger run until they go on a trip or make a major purchase to actually pay each other.
@jefielding thanks for the feedback, Jenny! @dan_couvreur point is great. Another surprise has been users have found a lot of subscriptions they had both been paying for (like Amazon, HBO, etc.), so it has saved them some money!

Tandem has been a game changer for me and my boyfriend. Not only is it handy for the day to day tracking of our expenses, but it makes it easier for us to have healthy, honest money conversations. We can actually see how much we're spending on activities, travel, food, etc. Super happy we have Tandem and excited to see what features they roll out next!

@lxchen RIGHT!? I feel the same way. Money is not a fun or easy subject by any means. This eliminates that hardship for sure. One conversation to get your partner on the app, and the rest is just swiping.
@pablo_ignacio yes - except with Splitwise you still have to manually enter in your expenses to be split (by referencing credit card statements, receipts, etc.). Tandem is different because it connects to your debit/credit cards and pull in expenses automatically (saving you time), and it also allows you to automate expenses you will always want to split (Splitwise does not!).
This app has been valuable for my partner and I who just moved in together. We appreciate the ability to choose expenses to split, alter the split amount, and seamlessly transfer to Venmo to settle our splits.
Tandem team - my only pain point has been with notifications. My partner and I both have notifications enabled but don’t get notified when one inputs an expense. Maybe it’s user error, but we haven’t found a solution.
Other than that, we have been really pleased with the functionality, flexibility, and freshness that comes with this app. It’s perfect for those in our situation!

So you can specify to be notified when you have new transactions, your partner has split, or your partner is ready to settle, etc..
