Wifi Porter — Connect guests to your network quickly
Featured
29

Wifi Porter connects your guests to Wi-Fi by scanning a QR code or tapping on the device. It’s a nice way to avoid typing long passwords. Wifi Porter is carved from a block of hard maple, and is compatible with iOS and Android. Unlike other solutions, Wifi Porter doesn’t require any special apps, and it doesn’t require the host to be nearby.

So it's only phones, not computers right?
Peter Skinner
@espreedevora Focused on phones for sure. If you’ve got an iPhone/MacBook combo, you can scan the QR code with your phone, and iOS will share it with your laptop automatically.

Damn, these guys make cool products. This is perfect for AirBnBs, Coffee shops and businesses of all kinds. And the free colourful instructions are the real value-add:

Just ordered one. Love the concept of a physical interaction. Constructively though I feel like you break a promise with the user. It sells elegance and simplicity but at the ‘print out this QR code and stick it to the bottom’ moment it sucks out all of the magic.
Peter Skinner
@tomfrazier I love this comment, and I have very similar feelings about QR code. What eventually sold me on it was user testing, and the belief was that Porter should provide avenues for all devices to join, even if it means compromising on single-purposeness or elegance. I like to think of Wifi Porter as a device for now masquerading as a device for the future. Imperfect, practical, and something I really hope we can keep working on and improving.

Do you offer free shipping?
Peter Skinner
@chiancheng Yes, thanks for checking! The 2-pack and 4-pack both have free shipping included (the 4-pack is free worldwide).

Hi Makers & Hunters! I'm so excited (and nervous) to show you this work. You’re a bunch of smarties with good critique and suggestions. Please do let me know what you think (good and bad!). With recent connectivity improvements in iOS and Android, we thought it was a great time to explore new interactions for connecting to Wi-Fi. Wifi Porter works with nearly all current phones, and is compatible with the latest standards. Network credentials are displayed on the bottom of the Wifi Porter as a backup method for laptops and other devices. Did we miss anything? Would this be helpful? All comments appreciated, and have a great day!

@psidentity One question: How do you write the QR Code and NDEF data to the hardware? Does it have a connection itself? Also: What happens when I change my Wifi Password?
Peter Skinner
@plaetzchen Thanks, great questions! Setup is handled with our free iOS and Android apps. You’d use the app again to update the Wi-Fi password if it changes.
Philip Brechler
@psidentity I just found it on the Play Store. Great solution. So the Porter itself is battery free I assume.
Peter Skinner
@plaetzchen That’s right! No batteries required.

Like: • A simple and elegant solution to a real problem • Looks nice Dislike: • Price - Not sure if a QR code printed and hang in a frame wouldn't work as well for $20 less

In most countries across the EU / UK there is a need to know who has connected to their public network for legal reasons, does this capture that level of detail, or just simply connect to the wifi if it has a password?
John Rhee
Loving it. I understand the QR code, but what supports tap-to-connect? NFC?
Peter Skinner
@john_rhee Nailed it!
Eric Anderson
Any way you can help laptops connect too?
Peter Skinner
@ericmander iOS -> macOS password sharing works, but desktop operating systems in general seem to be a bit less focused on this type of connectivity.

Genius. Nice product. Will purchase!
MunzMan
wow! awesome, definitely will but it, just one thing, dose it support all devices and OSs, meaning, would I be able to sign in with an older versions of Android and IOS?
Peter Skinner
@dr_mse Thanks, great question! Android phones with Lollipop (released in 2014) can tap. iPhones require at least iOS 9 (released in 2015) to process the QR code. 2018 iPhones can also tap. Full compatibility info is at the bottom of https://tenonedesign.com/porter.php
