The Buttermilk Company helps you make authentic, fresh Indian meals in 5 minutes by just adding hot water! Our products are vegan, preservative free, and non-GMO.

We've changed a lot in the last 4 months! Most exciting: four new dishes, new packaging to include nutrition facts + spice levels, double the portions in each packet, and subscriptions!

Makes no sense.

Pros:

Quirky Brand?

Cons:

Way over priced. Debatable quality (Freeze dried).

Mitra Raman
Hey Youssef, sorry you feel that our products aren't a good enough value, but I do have a few clarifying points. 1) Our prices are $4-6 for single servings. Each packet makes 1.5-2 cups of food which is actually more than a single serving, so it's very well-priced, especially when comparing to the alternatives. I'm not sure you could find a full, fresh meal for this price and convenience in many other places. 2) It is not freeze dried, dehydrated, or manipulated in any way. All our products are 100% fresh and preservative-free, and we pride ourselves on our high quality. I encourage you to try it first ;)

One of the joys of cooking (esp. Indian) food is the assembly and understanding of the ingredients. This removes that entirely. Likewise, there are hundreds of products like this in regular grocery stores. Why is this featured on Product Hunt? However, forgetting all of that, the price is an absolute rip-off. For example: $4.50 for 3 portions of rice? Rice which doesn't look like good quality rice, based on the photos. You can buy about 20 portions of high quality basmati rice for that price in any asian food market. Likewise, same with all of the spices. You're paying a 10x mark-up for a no-name brand that just looks cute. I'm really struggling to see the longterm viability or value here.

@ys Thanks for your comment! I'll address your points below: - Our product is specifically made to give you a homemade meal when you don't have the time, ingredients, or energy to make it yourself. We are not posing as a way to learn Indian cooking, but as a way to enjoy it at anytime, anywhere! - You won't find a product like ours in grocery stores. The available options are either frozen or dehydrated meals that lack nutritional value and (usually) taste. Our products are 100% fresh (no preservatives), made from real people's recipes to ensure authentic taste, and use high quality ingredients. We provide the quality and freshness of a meal kit with the convenience of the frozen/microwaveable meals. - Our basmati rice is extremely high quality. We use the same brand as Tilda's Pure Basmati Rice. You can of course purchase larger portions at smaller prices, but our products are for those people who prefer to only have as much rice on-hand as they need at the moment. It's not for everyone, and that's ok! - Our products aren't just spices. You get everything you need for the meal, made from scratch and prepped by us in our kitchen so that you can just add hot water to complete the dish. For instance, our daal packet includes: pressure cooked lentils mixed with fresh tomato, homemade ginger paste, and fresh seasoning using local, high quality ingredients. If it were just spices, I agree it would be too expensive. But it isn't :) - We are the alternative to the microwaveable packaged meals you usually go for now, because we don't believe that convenience and quick preparation should come at the sacrifice of quality and taste.

yo how about some pongal and avial? how do you request stuff?
Mitra Raman
@thepriyadarshy interesting you mention those, they were both on the shortlist for our first products! Noted ;)

@mitraraman dope. thanks! I personally will never pay someone for khichidi as a matter of principle (it being the easiest/cheapest food I can make myself) but I am eager to try some of your more involved dishes to improve my dinner time. ive got trying out some of your dishes on my todo list.
Mitra Raman
@thepriyadarshy can't wait to see what you think!

Gil Akos
Just ordered and looking forward to trying! One suggestion - I love the color palette of the site but the muted color button styling on checkout makes the buttons appear as if there is pending info still to submit.
Mitra Raman
@gil_akos thank you for your order! That's a great callout, will update it soon! Thanks for the feedback :)
Andrew Egenes
Great, now I'm going to be tempted to eat Indian for every meal every night of the week. 🥥🌶️

Hi PH! I'm super excited to relaunch Buttermilk here + share all of our exciting updates with you. First things first, we're offering a special 15% discount on all first orders of $30+ with the code 'PHBUTTERMILK15' (https://thebuttermilkco.com/disc...) We've made some pretty significant changes while keeping the core value of our product the same: help people feel at home wherever they are. Since we crowdsource our recipes from real people in the community, rest assured that our food is 100% authentic + will always give you that home-cooked taste. Most importantly, we've listened to our customers and delivered: - Double the portion sizes in each packet for the same price. - Variety! We introduced Chana Masala, Coconut Chutney, Quinoa, and Brown Rice last month, and have 8 more recipes in the pipeline. - Subscriptions to your favorite dishes (no minimums) for every 1-4 weeks. All subscriptions get 10% off and free shipping on every delivery. - New packaging that highlights nutrition facts and spice levels. - Recommended packs to help you decide what to get based on your preferences + lifestyle In other exciting company news, we were accepted into Y Combinator's S18 batch this past May! It's been a crazy fun summer + I can't believe it's almost coming to a close already. We have more exciting things coming up soon, so thank you for being a part of the Buttermilk journey! www.thebuttermilkco.com

@mitraraman What bout delivery outside US? Russia eg?
Mitra Raman
@graciasterminator unfortunately not at the moment! Hopefully soon :)
Alex Abdo
@mitraraman Hey Mitra, it looks like you meant to put 'PHBUTTERMILK15' instead of 'PHBUTTERMILK5', just wanted it to give you the heads up. I'm putting in my first order for the Buttermilk Suite #2 right now! :)
Mitra Raman
@alexabdo1 OMG you're right!! Thank you for pointing that out, just updated!!!
Alex Abdo
@mitraraman No problem! Also another thing I noticed: when I use the 15% off, it negates the Free Shipping on my order for the Buttermilk Suite #2 and actually ends up costing more than not using the discount at all ($5.70 saved with discount, but $5.95 shipping)
Ben Rosen
Really cool! My wife and I have just started making Indian food (it's our favorite) so this will totally come in handy.
Mitra Raman
@rosen Thank you! That's awesome to hear, what are your favorite dishes? Hope Buttermilk becomes a good addition to your menu.
Alexandra Botez
I cannot wait to try the new recipes added this month! Looking forward to using the discount code ^_^
Mitra Raman
@alexandrabotez Thank you so much!!
recon

I'd love to order butter chicken sauce etc, it's a shame that it's all vegan based. I understand however how it's a part of your core philosphy.

Pros:

Fantastic packaging & branding!

Cons:

Only vegan options :/
