Really interesting talk from Sam, particularly the stuff about AI 23 minutes in:
"Humans in our present form have been around for 70,000 years, biological life has been around for 2 billion years, and we're now within 100 years of the transition to digital life."
"There is some sense in which, we are the end of the line for biological life, and we are the boot-loader for digital life, and this is an unbelievable crazy thing."
"AI is one of the most important events to happen in the history of humanity and I don't think enough people are working on it"
"This could go really well - I hope it does - or it could go really badly. But in any case, this is something that should be owned by humanity as a whole. We are basically going to build our dependence. That has never happened before to a species. But I don't think that a single group or company should control this technology because a) there are ethical problems with that, and b) it's super dangerous." (which is why Y Combinator Research are trying to build the technology and distribute it very widely and give it to everybody for free)
Great to see some familiar faces in that crowd, and a great session. TheFamily have really dialled it up lately! If both NUMA and TheFamily could keep up this level of great speakers and content coming out of France, it would be pretty amazing for the ecosystem.
Also was reminded how awesome a lot of the YC frenchies have been lately. Fellow NUMA accelerator alumni Birdly were one of who Sam was referring to. I love their Slackbot!

Artificial Intelligence is the last human invention - Humanity will ever need to make …
Human Level Intelligence of AI has 50% chance of appearing by 2045
The ultimate Limits of information processing in machines are far far greater than biological tissue - Due to physics -
1. BRAIN - a biological neuron fires at 200Hz (200 times a second)
COMPUTER - while, a present day transistor operates at over 1GHz (over 1 billion times a second)
2. BRAIN - signals propagate slowly in axons - 100 m/s (maximum)
COMPUTER - while, signals propagate at the speed of light (299792458 m/s) in Integrated circuits
3. BRAIN - has to fit inside a cranium (skull)
COMPUTER - can be as large as a warehouse or larger
The potential of super-intelligence lies dormant today … much like the power of the atom remained dormant till 1945…
Once there is super-intelligence - (like we today control the fate of chimpanzees) -the fate of humanity will depend on what super-intelligence does or wants - What is the Goal it will seek through optimization?
Setting the AI’s Goal will be critical
As King Midas’ “goal” was poorly-specified or misconceived - everything he touched turned to gold…
Making superintelligent A.I. is a really hard challenge. Making superintelligent A.I. that is safe involves some additional challenge on top of that. The risk is that if somebody figures out how to crack the first challenge without also having cracked the additional challenge of ensuring perfect safety.
Once turned on - it won’t be possible to turn off - we cannot keep this super-intelligent genie locked up in a bottle.
