When I turned 21, like many others new to the bar scene, I had no idea what kind of drinks to buy or what I might like. After trying many things, some of which I loved and some I hated, I decided I wanted to start keeping track of what I have tried so I would never accidentally try the same thing I hated twice. I started taking photos of the drinks that I tried, and added notes to them in the notes app on my phone. This worked for a while, until it became very clear it wasn't a long term solution. It wasn't easily searchable, I couldn't filter the list, my notes weren't all formatted the same which made looking back challenging, and I knew I needed a better solution. There were other apps out there that had some of the features I was looking for, but they were all either just beer, or just wine, never any cocktails or recipes. I wanted an app that could keep track of all of it, in one place. I spent the better part of 3 years building Tried-It from scratch until finally, earlier this year, I felt it was ready to release to the public. Since launch, I have been working on new features and performance improvements.

This looks interesting. My friend used to take fotos from every whine bottle he had in his hands. I think you are not alone with your idea -> there is a demand, not sure how big, though?
Brad Varnum
@pronnenberg thanks! There is a demand, but I agree it's probably not the biggest. I have talked to some people that have done similar things to me, taking photos and notes in their phone. I have also talked to people who told me they know what they like and don't see a reason to keep track of what they've tried. I've known for a while that Tried-It wasn't an app everyone will want or use, but I think it will really help the people who do

I’m afraid I might be to tipsy to use this whilst imbibing
Brad Varnum
@lee_fischman That's fair haha 😂 I'm working on a feature I'm referring to as 'quick add'. Basically, you could just scan something or take a quick photo, and set a timer to remind you to add the rest of the information later. The goal would be make 'quick add' as fast as possible so when you are out at a bar or restaurant with friends you can spend as much time in the moment (not on your phone) as possible. Lets say you set the alarm to remind you at 9pm, you would get a push notification and when you tap it, it would prompt you to enter the rest of your review, and other data like location, tags, etc.

Congratulations on your launch and huge respect for staying the course over 3 years of development. I’ve tried wine and beer apps before, so I like the idea of a single app to integrate it all, and the geotagging makes it like a drink diary too!
Brad Varnum
@craig_williamson Thank you! To be fair, 3 years might be a bit of an exaggeration. I started it in September of 2020, but I've mostly worked on it on weekends and evenings. A drink diary is exactly what I was going for! It's feature list has grown over time too to include things like social features and cocktail recipes, so it's a bit more than just a drink diary now 🍻
