Congrats, guys! I made HEROkeyboard.com awhile back, trying to save the same problem, so I always enjoy seeing the innovation. It's a tough market for sure, but it sounds like you have a good team in place. Good luck!
I like out of box ideas. Thats why I installed the app however I suppose it just supports English. I couldnt find a way to switch to Turkish layout. Is this the case?
This keyboard started in 2015 on Kickstarter, meaning it had 5 years to mature. It brings a lot of novel ideas and I love the focus on privacy, but the prediction/autocorrect capabilities are still non-existent. And that's English, can't imagine how poor it would be in other languages. What makes keyboard productive is not a couple of nifty features like swipe to delete, but the overall speed of accurate writing.
SwiftKey might have way less intuitive controls, but I can make 20x more typos compared to TypeWise and still produce the final text faster and more accurately. That is the only thing that matters.
I hope this project keeps improving, but at this point, I can't recommend it. I still vote for it and I sincerely hope it one day becomes better than SwiftKey and Gboard.
Premium pricing feels more than fair, I would argue it is even cheap. However, missing a dark theme in default package seems tone-deaf in 2020.
@lebaux thanks for the comment, we're working on really cool AI improvements that should come out over the next few months... regarding dark theme: that's a good point, we'll think about it!
@davideberle I wish you luck, already gave you 5 stars on Play Store. You are really missing out by not asking for an email anywhere because I would like to be kept in the loop about updates.
@lebaux that's something we want to do asap, but we're not sure about how to best ask for it... what would we need to "offer" to you, for you to give us your email? is "staying up-to-date" sufficient?
@davideberle just be honest, if it doesn't work you can lie later. If you offer me to subscribe to mail that only arrives when there is a big product update, I'm in. You can add more categories of mails, with more cadence. Look at how hubspot is doing it — they have TOO much, but you will get the idea. Or, you can just release here again when you have big enough update.
Alternatively, just add a subscribe field and write "We are planning a big AI update that will make TW even faster. Would you like to be notified, when it is ready?"
It implies something is not ready, and companies don't enjoy showing that. I might be only person interested in such email. But you won't know unless you try it.
There is some other stuff that works with kids these days, like making a discord channel. I would not want that at all, but I know many kids are into it. Try things ツ
Hello Product Hunters!
Have you ever thought that QWERTY keyboard layout was created in 1873 for typing machines and it hasn’t been changed a lot since then? So you are most likely to use 150-year old technology on your smartphone!
During the past year our small multicultural team from Switzerland has been working on reinventing the smartphone keyboard, adapting it to typing with 2 thumbs.
As a result, we’ve created Typewise – the keyboard that helps you type faster and reduce your typos by 80%. This is achieved by our patented hexagon layout, own autocorrection and word prediction algorithms, which we develop together with ETH Zurich, one of the leading universities in the field of AI.
Our algorithms work fully offline (in comparison with widespread cloud-based algorithms), so the data is kept safe on your device, and you can enjoy 100% privacy using Typewise.
Here are some of my favorite features:
-Modifying auto correct – when autocorrection does a wrong correction (I type a lot in my native language Swiss German, where there is no standard spelling), I simply tap on the grey button in the smart bar, which undoes the correction and also improves the algorithm
-Capitalizing word prediction – when I want to capitalize a prediction word, I simply swipe up on the word in the smart bar, which capitalizes it directly
-Customizable shortcuts – I simply type “ilu” which automatically expands to “I love you 🥰” to express my love to my wife
-Themes – when I feel blue, I switch to the rainbow theme to get up my spirits
We are cooking up even more cool features, that will save you time and make your texting more productive. We’d love to hear your feedback so far, so please share your thoughts with us!
Cheers,
David
It's very weird to me that 99% of all people still use a layout that had its origin in the age and physical design of typewriters🤯
Since I am a clear keybord-layout optimization enthusiast you guys have my biggest support. I've switched from QWERTZ to ADNW and never looked back a year ago and now this. Wow. I'll definetly share it with the ADNW community at groups.google.com/g/adnw/ 🙏🏼
But I also have two questions:
- What exactly means: 80% less errors, and 33% faster and how did you arrive at those numbers i.e. what was the setup of those tests? Those numbers seem unrealistic high to me.
- Also, after what practicing time or words your test subjects reached this improvement?
@moritzwallawitsch great to hear and happy to answer your questions:
- We used a recent Uni Cambridge / ETH Zurich typing test (https://userinterfaces.aalto.fi/...) with 37,000 users and had our users perform the same test, that's how we arrived at this (average) number
- Typically ~1 week, although it also varies as some people learn new things/behavior very quickly (in one day) and others may take weeks or even months and always fall back to how they did things before
@davideberle The real question here is: how many users did you test? As you might know, from the law of large numbers, the sample size can make a big difference. In my opinion, with such big claims, this information should be part of those claims and not mislead the viewer of such.
I think here in Germany, you wouldn't even be allowed by law to claim something like that without explaining the tests made in the fine print.
Seems a little insane to ask me to have a monthly subscription to a keyboard, especially if it's 100% offline and there are no cloud services provided. I don't mind paying a one off cost for a useful app, but if I'm paying for a service I expect a service.
@craig_haseler there is a lifetime version :) since we don't collect data or display ads, getting revenue by selling premium features is pretty much the only way of continue developing the product
It's always a hassle to change people's habits, specially when it comes to type on a keyboard. However, it looks like a very nice product. I just downloaded it and subscribed to the free trial. Let's see how it goes now.
I'd maybe suggest to extend it to 14 days if it takes approx 7 days to get use to the keyboard? @davideberle
If it ain't broke don't fix it is great advice... if you don't want to make a difference in the world. I never imagined we needed a new keyboard! Rock on Typewise!
Interesting idea for an optimized mobile keyboard. I would genuinely love to get rid of swype on my android, but I just haven't found anything as fast - until, maybe, this?
@kristin_vargas1 the tutorial should explain how the backspace works, is simply swiping to the left anywhere on the keyboard (quick swipe = 1 char, swipe+hold = as many chars as you swipe) - did it work?
@michael_macmillan the free version is absolutely usable and an upgrade is not required. since we don't collect your data nor show you ads, having an upgrade option is our only way of being able to continue the development.
Great product! I've been using it for 2-3 years now and it keeps improving my typing. It's about time that we have some innovation on the classic keyboards. Keep up the good work.
