@rrhoover I wonder how a company like Caviar feels in this instance with smaller, new startups such as Maple and larger behemoths like Uber both cutting away at market share simultaneously....
@rrhoover Very curious to see what it's like from the driver's perspective e.g. if they get to pick between a delivery vs person right now? It'd be interesting if Uber has already started abstracting away transporting people to being the uber for x. Anyone competing on speed or pricing will need to really start focusing on user experience and differentiation...
Very curious to see how Uber will impact the on demand food delivery business - it's crazy to see how it can launch a "new" vertical overnight with its solid infrastructure, built-in audience and marketing reach.
Used this in LA for the last couple months and it's pretty amazing. While other delivery services take 30-60min, Uber is there in less than 10. They've also done a good job to partner with quality restaurants so the extra $$ you spend feels justifiable.
@philboscarino This is definitely the biggest plus over other delivery services. On several occasions I have seen "delivered in 50-60" minutes and changed my mind about ordering.
@chris_hendel Totally. Did postmates one time and an hour later I wasn't even hungry. Would have been more convenient for me to walk on my bike and ride to the store. With Uber it really is convenient.
I'm excited to give this a try. So many companies are debundling their apps, but I really like Uber's approach where their app is a one-stop shop and uses the same feature base for no matter what you want delivered. It also allows them to quickly ramp up quick tests of new products or one-day promotions without having to re-train or acquire users.
@rrhoover Have you guys thought about maybe segmenting PH into "New Products" and "Updates to Products" sections? I noticed the feed is already split into "featured" and "upcoming".
Posts like this are very useful to me because I live in NYC, but for everyone else, I feel that a new post for every new city that a big product enters will clutter the feed with things not relevant to them. This way, users can be sure that the primary feed they see is made up of entirely new products, which is what Product Hunt is all about.
@rrhoover@ghobs91 This is a essentially new product (food delivery vs. taxi – very different), so it shouldn't be penalized just b/c it's not also a new company.
@rrhoover@philfreo It's been posted before back when it was called UberFRESH: http://www.producthunt.com/posts...
I'm all for new products from the same company, I was referring more to the same product being posted but with new locations.
Hmm, the lunch seems pretty expensive and/or intense than I typically go for during the week (can't imagine the post lunch food coma from a Mighty Quinns brisket sandwich), but interested to see how this goes.
I'm not as big on the "uber model for food" as others. The reason being that at least my experience living in a decent-sized town (Des Moines, Iowa) and working in the downtown area.... I don't think people have the problem of not being able to find affordable, fast, high quality food for lunch within walking distance. I'm not sure I'd pay the prices listed on the menus just for the convenience of walking outside and picking it up.
Wow these guys launch between 14th and 40th and call it "Order food in NYC"? Congratulations, I guess. No wonder they can do 10 minutes or less. Please come to the East Village.
@pablosmith_ Maple is taking a very similar approach, launching specifically in FiDi. It's the best way to scale this service and keep the time for delivery down.
@andythegiant then they should clarify it. I could also say I deliver packages to the entire US and leave out 20 states. If you only do Midtown, then don't say NYC, simple as that.
@pablosmith_ Disagree. If they claimed "anywhere in New York" then this argument is valid. If we nitpicked at the marketing copy of every startup launching a new product, we'd see much lower rates of day 1 adoption. I don't find this to be deceitful at all.
I tried it in Chicago today. Today's menu item was from XOCO, a Rick Bayless restaurant. I ordered via one press and it was literally at my office door in 3 minutes and tasted delicous. Uber's a logistics company... if they can make the right partnerships with their logistical prowess, it's sure to disrupt. Watch out Grubhub.
Just got an email that this is launching in Chicago as well. They're delivering from some pretty solid restaurants, and partnering with Rick Bayless to deliver from Xoco.
It's definitely neat that Uber is branching beyond cars and keeping it all within one app for our simplicity. I wonder how they'll manage the plethora of little slider buttons. It's already pretty squished on non-6+ screens.
@meghhv How many cities do they launch before they buy up the .com? Surprised they haven't done it already. It will probably cost them 10 minutes of a day's revenue.
Surprising that San Francisco isn't on the list of launch cities. Perhaps it's because Spoonrocket and Sprig have captured a decent lead on the market compared to other cities.
