From a purely technical point of view, Untappd is widely seen by Phonegap developers as one of the best examples of apps using Phonegap for cross-platform.
The developers have done a fantastic job making the app seem more like it was developed natively, however the fact that they don't have access to the native controls does give the game away.
At the end of the day though, as long as the functionality and performance don't suffer, then I'm not sure if that really matters.
I have been using Untappd now for about 18 months, and I love it. I can see what my friends are drinking, what they recommend, and we have even gotten a bit competitive for who has the most unique beers and badges....
Totally love this app for all the reasons people have cited (rate / catalog my brews, see what others are drinking / have rated, compare my ratings against the average). But I also really love the fact that for $15 a year or whatever I can get all my data in JSON or other easily consumable formats :) Too cool!
