Featured
69

Care by Volvo is a car subscription service that makes having a car as transparent, easy, and hassle free as having a phone.

A simple monthly subscription that includes everything (car, maintenance, insurance, taxes), a new car every 2 years, and services to make your life easier (like fueling & washing your car while it sits in the lot at work)

So this is what you've been working on, @atifatif. 😮 Very cool! Volvo just launched car ownership as a service. The integration of additional services like car care, fueling, and others is smart and allows Volvo to upsell and generate more revenue beyond traditional purchase or lease agreements.
Adam Crouch
@rrhoover Thank you Ryan!
Travis Fischer
I want this for Tesla!
Will Mauro
When will this be available in NY or NJ? And what is the subscription cost each month? @heyadamcrouch
Adam Crouch
@billymauro For the US, details will be announced at the LA motor show in November

“many people want to have their own car rather than using car sharing services” Do you have data on this? Not sure if people want or “need” their own car... it’s great that the dealer and maintence experience is improved, but at the end of the day your still carrying extra capacity and optionality everyday of the year.
Jason Dainter
Im curious if since this fee (600 EUR) would be a car "subscription" service whether this would make it something you could put directly on your company as a tax except expense? In Sweden (I have a Swedish AB) currently leasing cars is quite complicated, and if my accountant tells me correctly it can't simply be written off as an expense and it gets more complicated with aditional taxes etc to the point where its almost more economical for entrepreneurs to just buy cars privately. Do you know if this model would change this at all @atifati?
Paul Gosnell
Love this and feels a natural progression to car non-ownership. I haven’t run the figures but this does seem expensive compared to lease or normal financing in the UK. 2 years also seems long for this type of deal, every 6 or 12 months or by mileage would be so much nicer and flexible. Question: would a credit search be done on the driver? Is it a contract lease deal marketed differently?
Adam Crouch
@paulgosnell Thanks! Yes, there will be a credit check. It's similar to a lease, but with more services included. We are trying to keep things simple for the initial launch, but more flexibility around length does seem like it would be useful for customers
Paul Gosnell
@heyadamcrouch with regards pricing I suppose if its all in with insurance, tax, and some other perks, for the new XC40, thats not too bad. If it was on a 6 or 12-month option, I'd be signing up now!

I'd rather not even have to deal with storing the care when not in use. Is there a version of this service that is more like a high-end Zipcar? IE, I have 24/7 access to car, but it's a car that is shared by a small group of people?
Adam Crouch
@andrewliebchen this would enable you to organize something like that with a group of your friends. You can set who has access to the car when, and each has person can use their phone as the key. Someone would have to act as the "manager", and one or more of the friends would need to store it when not in use though.
Parker Agee
Interesting! The only thing that still seems a little vague is how the residual value is handled at the end of the 24 months. What happens if the vehicle is wrecked during the 24 months and the actual value of the car is not the same as the residual value predicted in the beginning of the 24 months?

Congrats, @atifatif @heyadamcrouch! It looks great, super interesting!

Hej everyone! We saw a clear customer need: many people want to have their own car rather than using car sharing services, but the experience of buying the car and owning the car is full of hassles. You have to negotiate with a dealer, and you're always worried you're paying more than someone else. You have to pay a lot upfront, and then additional costs pile on. And you're locked in -- if you want to change later or just get a new car, you have to do all this over again. Why couldn't having a car be as easy as having a phone? Why can't your car give you time back in your life? This led us to Care by Volvo. A simple monthly fee, that's the same for everyone nationally with no haggling, and that includes everything: the car and maintenance, and even insurance and taxes. A new car every 2 years, so you always have the latest and greatest. Occasional access to borrow a different car when you're going to the mountains for a weekend or have people visiting. When you need maintenance and repair, we'll pick your car up, do the work, and bring it back to you. You can even have your car fueled and washed while it sits in the parking lot at work. Another feature that I'm pretty excited about is that you can let a friend borrow your car without needing to exchange keys: enter their email address and the dates/times you want them to have access, and they can use their phone as the key. Pricing will be €699/month across Europe for the base XC40 small premium SUV. Pricing for the US will be announced at the LA motor show in November. We've been working hard to develop the concept and make it a reality, would love your feedback hunters! PS: we're looking for outstanding product people, to be based in Sweden or Mountain View (open to relocation). Let me know if you'd like to talk! https://career012.successfactors...

@heyadamcrouch When's it available in the US? Super compelling for us - we don't *really* want to own right now but if price is right it might make sense to swap our Car2Go+Zipcar+Uber setup. I'm also a bit anti-buy right now bc I want to see how the electric market matures (and the autonomous market as well). Super cool product.
Duarte Martins
@heyadamcrouch great concept. I have a question though, will this be the plugin XC40? If so does it take into consideration the tax incentives to own a PHEV in the different EU states? Also, €700/month seems pretty expensive when compared to other lease offerings.
Scott
@heyadamcrouch This really is amazing. Truly disruptive any plans to integrate with Uber to allow people to rent out their car when they are not using it to Uber driver in order to generate revenue?
Olivier Hamel
@heyadamcrouch Very well done sir, I feel like I am exactly the target here. Just one question before I buy (or shall I say subscribe...), do I need to live in a specific radius from a Volvo car dealership?
Alessandro Mannino
@heyadamcrouch @duarteosrm when you consider no money down, maintenance, insurance and taxes it's pretty close.
Arlo Gilbert
As a parent to at soon to be teen driver, this is super attractive if the cost roughly translates into USDs as the currency converter shows. Insurance alone will be several hundred dollars per month, drop in a used car that I expect will only be used for a few years, and it could end up being a wash but getting a new (safe) car instead. Excited to see this launch in the US.
Dun
This is very exciting!

Somebody is bound to call this full stack leasing. Wait, I just did. Dang.

I'm not sure if I get it. What's the difference between this and the regular monthly car rental?
Philip Brechler
Prices for Germany, including service, insurance (800€ retention) and some other goodies start at 699€ a month for 15,000km or 9,300ml a year. Can go up to 899€ a month if you want the R sporty model
Matt Holsinger
@plaetzchen I'm unfamiliar with automobile use in Germany... is 15,000km / year good, bad, or normal?
Olivier Hamel
@plaetzchen @mattholsinger Sounds like a daily commute to work roughly. If you use highways often I believe you go quickly up to 25,000km
Philip Brechler
@mattholsinger I would say it is the lower end of what you would drive. 10.000 is usually the lowest end for leasing contracts.
Steve Luvender
This is so cool. I wonder what the pricing is going to be like — it sounds like EVERYTHING is covered, even insurance.
Adam Crouch
@steveluvender Thank you! And you're right, pretty much everything is included. It will be €699/month across Europe for the base XC40, pricing for the US will be announced at the LA motor show in November.
Sambruce Joseph
This is cool. I also strongly believe that Volvo should do something for their classic beasts such as the Volvo 940 which is still strong and running till these days.
JR Farr
I'm a big fan of this. Sure, maybe there's a few questions and quirks to figure out. But overall, seeing a well-established brand like Volvo take the reigns and try to push the automotive industry forward for today's world is amazing to see. Cars as a service, full stack leasing or whatever buzz word this ends up with, this is innovative.
Adam Crouch
@jrfarr thank you JR!
Tyler Swartz
Interesting. This seems like it will be a great service. I’m really curious to see what pricing will be
Adam Crouch
@tylerswartz Thanks! It will be €699/month across Europe for the base XC40, pricing for the US will be announced at the LA motor show in November.
Elliot
But how much and is it available yet? If this on the website, it's very well hidden...
Adam Crouch
@raisonco @steveluvender It will be €699/month across Europe for the base XC40, pricing for the US will be announced at the LA motor show in November.
