Scan a QR code with your phone to get in... Seriously? Has anyone tried this? Impressions?

@rrhoover i don't see iPhone here. Wait is this an official WhatsApp client? Android users how is it? It's a pretty neat way to solve the problem of having a web account with a phone# tethered messaging app despite the dodo-ness of QR codes

@rrhoover half the world can't try it because iOS :p

@rrhoover Downloading a QR code scanner to try it out :)

@rrhoover Also not yet iPhone compatible apparently. But I do like the concept. Stigma about QR codes aside, this would be a seemingly very secure way of logging in to a web interface. To the user it's a single factor authentication but the security of a two factor. Not as easy as a traditional email/password combination but I would bet it's far, far more secure and harder to "game" as your unique identifier with WhatsApp is your actual phone number.

@rrhoover Mostly a reply for the benefit of others who might be tempted to work out what the code is, but this QR code isn't a URL ;-) It's three base64 encoded binary payloads (of 112, 32, and 16 bytes in length respectively) separated by commas with no immediately obvious pattern to them (though I'd put money on one of them being a HMAC or an encoded timestamp of some sort..)

Can't seem to get this to work on Android. QR code is opening a bunch of text. Anyone have any luck?

@benln @yuvals You have to open it within WhatsApp not with a QR Scanner :p

Telegram already has web and desktop clinets without the QR code.

I can't belive that a company like WhatsApp can't build a better web app. iOS isn't compatible because of Apple's limitations? Look at Telegram. With an API (that I'm sure that they have) create a web app for ALL browsers and without depending on the mobile app.

I think 90% of non-tech users will not be able to get this running.. have they ever tested this setup procedure with real users=?

After looking a little deeper this is the worst implementation they could have come up with. 1. Your phone must be online. 2. Clumsy QR code auth. 3. No iOS support. 4. Not a native client but Chrome-only. Honestly, what were they thinking?
Srikrishnan Ganesan
Only works on Chrome! Bah.

I don't understand, why WhatsApp is actively waging war against third-party developers and their users. Following limitations are ridiculous in 2015: 1. It only works on a single browser - Google Chrome 2. It requires the current WhatsApp client for Android (What about iPhone) - It's a second screen application :( 3. It doesn't work if your phone is not connected to the internet - Wat?

No iPhone?! :(

Making me fire up Chrome is not a good first impression... 👎

Sadly, this is too little, too late. Telegram knows how to do this a lot better.

So .emoji is the first selector in their CSS. I guess it's a decent app @rrhoover :)

WhatsApp thinks this is "smart"...but in reality it is painful. And for me it doesn't make ANY sense why they didn't add iOS. "Apple regularities and restrictions" bla bla bla. There are million ways of authorizing other than "super-cool" qr-codes.

Hi, The instant connection of WhatsApp and WhatsApp web is amazing. It makes my business more reliable and easy. I found little more details at https://thejournalpost.com/techn...

As Apple resurrects NFC, Whatsapp embraces QR codes for authentication on Android, Windows & Blackberry. Good move!

Not having desktop access to WhatsApp is the primary reason I haven't pursued it more. None of my friends being on it is the second reason, blugh. I really want more people on WhatsApp.
Dvir Reznik
No iOS support yet... :-((

I was hoping this would save me some precious phone battery but you need to keep your phone on too for some reason, really, really a shame :(

It seems this is pretty painful because of the way WhatsApp has been built (for both technical and security reasons): https://news.ycombinator.com/ite...

Loving this. Works great on my Android M8!
