Is it really necessary to have a woman with no lower half clothing on to sell this product? The product is interesting enough.
Arthur
@frederickpolk I also found the girl being in her underwear a bit unnecessary (as attractive as she is).
Jie Meng-Gérard
@arthurgd3 @frederickpolk The video is about how music impacts our life and emotions. We wanted to follow that woman through her day, morning to night, from a "blue mood" to a "red mood", music (controlled by her voice) being the catalyst of her emotions. The underwear was an artistic choice from the director to show that she just got out of bed. We tried to do something creative & emotional, we never thought to use sexuality for marketing purpose. We're sorry if it raised confusion.

@jie @arthurgd3 @frederickpolk The speaker looks great but try to picture a man instead of the women and you'll see why it is very sexist.

@frederickpolk yeah, it's so out of touch! I find it hilarious (and cringy as hell). I can totally picture the CEO shouting "I want it sexy, sex sells!"
andrea saez
@jie @arthurgd3 @frederickpolk The idea that this was meant to 'follow her throughout her day' was completely opaqued by the fact that you had the need to zoom into her ass. There is no 'confusion' about the message here, other than for you.

Hi folks! Two years ago, we started working on a new product: a voice-controlled speaker with a beautiful design and powerful sound. Today, we're incredibly excited to unveil the new Whyd speaker! It's a product born from our community, we're really building something for people like us -- who appreciate great sound and good design, and want a speaker that’s easy to use. You can control your music by speaking directly to Whyd. Say “Play my summer playlist” or “Play M.I.A.”. You don’t need your phone and it's compatible with your favorite music services. The speaker has very powerful audio capabilities. It delivers crystal clear sound with deep and dramatic bass at 360 degrees - enabled by 4 full range drivers and one dedicated subwoofer. We've launched a beautiful website today and we are starting our pre-orders at a very friendly price. And for the Product Hunt community, we’re offering a $50 discount on the preorder price! All you need to do is enter the code “PRODUCTHUNT” at checkout. Thanks for your feedback and we're here to answer any question!

@ryan_chan thanks Ryan!
Kieran
@gillespoupardin wtf is up with that video? cringe worthy
Ryan Hoover
Alexa is super awesome but it's not an audiophile's first choice. Looks great, @gillespoupardin.
Gilles Poupardin
@rrhoover Thanks Ryan! As music lovers, we wanted a speaker that both sounds great and looks beautiful!
Julian
@gillespoupardin @rrhoover how would you rank your product compared to an Echo? Looking to buy it to test at our office (or do you do partnership deals for startups having a similar vision to Whyd's? ;-) )
Zoli
How do you guys deal with audio commands when the music is blasting? From my experience with echo, once the volume is past 5 or so, you have to yell next to it to get it to hear you or turn down the volume manually.
Jie Meng-Gérard
@zolihonig We’re using noise-cancellation at the hardware level, taking the music stream (ogg, flac...) and throwing it back to our noise cancellation processor so that it knows in real time what is music and what is voice. When it blasts too strong and user is far, voice control efficiency diminishes, but overall our voice recognition will work great in most environments, whether you’re alone at home or having some friends over.
Tony Ana
very impressive little video guys - well done, loved the first transition with the toothbrush. gold points for the video editor and film crew :)
Jie Meng-Gérard
@tony_anastasi Thanks! We worked with a great video team :) Shot with love in Paris. Music impacts our lives in so many ways!
Gilles Poupardin
@tony_anastasi Thank you Tony! We're honored.
Rhai
Very impressive team and execution. Whyd is the most beautiful smart speaker on the market, period.
Gilles Poupardin
@rhaivimies Thank you Rhai. That means a lot to us.

Whyd makes a voice-controlled speaker that's beautifully designed and has powerful sound. You can play music by talking directly to the speaker. Say “Play my morning mix” or “Play Drake”. You don’t need your phone. I've heard the sound that comes out of it and it sounds really good.
Justin Boogaard
Been waiting for this for weeks, thanks for the code Gilles!
Gilles Poupardin
@justinboogaard thanks for your support, Justin!
Garry POUPIN
The speaker can work autonomously after the setup or the speaker must be connected to my mobile phone ?
Jie Meng-Gérard
@kapsteur The speaker works autonomously. You don't need a phone other than for setup.
Brandon Foo
Whyd looks like the best speaker on the planet! Can't wait until mine ships. Congrats team! 💌
Jie Meng-Gérard
@foolywk Thanks for all the support!
Feras
Can I control things other than the speaker with my voice?
Jie Meng-Gérard
@firasalmanna you can control your music with your voice, no lights or other smart devices on V1. We're focus on providing the best home music experience first, before expanding to new verticals.
Olof Mathé
so impressed by this team and product
Gilles Poupardin
@olofster Thanks for your support Olof!
Franco Bouly
What a story behind this start-up, I used their app in the early days and their path since then is incredible. Nice turn over guys, the product looks amazing! I wish you all the best.
Marcos Cerqueira
Nice design, device and website. No internal storage from what I gather, pure streamer?
Jie Meng-Gérard
@marcos_cerqueira Thanks! There's definitely local storage, mostly used to cache your most listened tracks and improve latency.
Hugo Fauquenoi
Great move @gillespoupardin! You guys were building a music streaming social network a few years ago. How did you decide to make the move? Also, top-notch video. Would love to have the songs! 😬
Gilles Poupardin
@hfauq hey Hugo - yeah, the social network gathers a community 100,000+ producers, concert venues, DJs, bloggers, artists and music lovers around the world. It's a great place for music curators to collect and share tracks they love. But we never found a way to make it a sustainable business. So we decided to Open source the platform and give the keys to the community. We were unsatisfied with the existing home speakers on the market. Some of them have good audio quality but are completely lagging in software, and they're not pretty. They're giving a "black plastic box” vibe with clunky mobile applications and connections to streaming services. We've spent the past two years building the speaker we music lover want. A speaker that combines beautiful design, high-audio quality and the convenience of voice control. Here's the track list: Tides - ft Dannah - Four Lore: https://soundcloud.com/fourlore/... Контроль - The Toxic Avenger: https://soundcloud.com/thetoxica... From Sckratch - Savaan Thanks!
Paul Lê
Looks awesome, indeed Alexia is not for music lover. Can't wait to get mine
Jie Meng-Gérard
@paul_le we're grateful for all the support we had!
Clément Perrot
Congrats guys, product looks amazing!
Diego Flores
I just fell inlove with this. Really good job guys. I cannot say anything about the sound quality yet of course, but if you keep your promise and it is good, I will definetely buy it! Not that expensive for what it is!
Jesse Holmes
Had a sneak peek of Whyd a few months back and it's amazing. Lossless quality at max volume and sound reach was impressive.
Andrew Brackin
How loud is this and how high quality is it?
Jie Meng-Gérard
@brackin Our speaker definitely sounds better than the Sonos Play 3. The audio configuration is one dedicated subwoofer + 4 full range drivers. You can have more details about the audio configuration here: https://whyd.com/tech-specs/
