One of the most interesting legacies of the VirtualBoy is that it drove one of Nintendo's best creative minds, Gunpei Yokoi, from the company.
Yokoi was the creator of the GameBoy, Game & Watch and designed the D-Pad design used on most modern controllers. He built out the VirtualBoy to showcase Nintendo's R&D prowess. Nintendo then decided to mass-produce and market the console, even though it originated as an experiment.
Even after the VirtualBoy was an obvious flop, the then-president of Nintendo forced Yokio to tour and promote it anyways, hurting his until-then positive reputation.
Cool idea but I'm not sure virtual reality will catch on ;)
Seriously though, I remember being a kid when this came out. This was the coolest thing ever, despite the tron look & giant goggles. Still a little bit sad I don't have one.
I am not sure if it's sad or what - but I still have mine. I just always thought it was weird how they have a message pop up after X minutes to remind you to look away - maybe thats why I wear contacts now - ha!
