Explore African art like never before! The WMTA platform identifies artworks and provides interesting information about the artist, art style etc. Discover, learn, and contribute to a vibrant community.
I'm a big fan of art and an artist myself (sometimes). I've spent most of my life appreciating paintings by artists from all over the world. Especially African artists.
At some point, I could tell you who made a painting just by looking at the style. I thought this was perfectly normal until some of my friends told me that it wasn't common.
That was when I had the thought.
If I can recognise paintings from artists even if I have never seen that specific artwork before, can computers do this too? In fact, can they do a better job?
In 2023, I started working on a project to answer these questions. That was how WMTA started. As I continued working on the project, I realised a deeper problem. African art is poorly documented and no one seems to be solving this.
I expanded the project from identifying African painting styles to documenting African artworks and artists.
It's still in the beta phase but I'd appreciate feedback, questions and ideas on improving this.
