Lots of skepticism, but now that this has launched — it'll be interesting to see if normies will embrace it and allow their retinas to be scanned into the blockchain for about $60... With generative AI, we're definitely going to need ways to distinguish between human and machine actors — but is this the right vehicle to achieve that outcome? It certainly isn't a flawless plan...!
The first time I needed a downvote button on PH. It's naive to think that AI will not be able to generate fake biometric data to fool systems like this. We need a decentralized reputation graph of public keys, and all content simply must be signed or assumed fake.
Interesting project for sure, will depend on the use cases, no popular service using this yet to minimize bots and ai. I like that it’s not personal though, unlike Binance for example where they scan your face and tie it to your ID, but they’re solving a bit of a different problem also. Also where the money in the World App could be spent?
Black Mirror-esque vibes aside, this project assumes that humanity is useless and hopeless, and that we've already lost the battle with AI.
I think this view is incredibly pessimistic - we're a creative bunch of apes, and we'll manage to find ways to have thriving economies even if most or all regular jobs do end up being automated.
That said, I do like the orbs design, looks like the robot from Portal a bit.
As a technology anthropologist who's helped many companies bring software/hardware products to market, this is unlikely to succeed for several reasons. Growing mistrust of biometrics as a whole, the general market has zero trust for crypto right now, neither this hardware nor blockchain can scale at what would be needed at a societal level. I could go on.
Exciting and interesting! Quite challenging topics all together in one place. Curios to see how DID and VC backing implemented. Is it Hyperledger Indy I wonder..
Meanwhile I clicked on "register to the waitlist" link but it says "page can't be found" for https://docs.worldcoin.org/waitlist
I bought a bunch of the new-fangled Worldcoin. I say new-fangled, because I am the co-founder of the original Worldcoin. My WDC had lofty aspirations. Almost a dozen people backed us. We even had one guy in France comment on one of our threads. Just a guess, but Sam Altman seems to have a lot more engagement than we did. It's unclear where we went wrong.
Very excited about this project. In a future world, I hope this project will bring humans together. On the other hand, I hope it remains totally independent and managed by its users, otherwise it'll be hello George Orwell
I'd like to understand the concept of a jobless society, but so far I've been unable to do so. The reason for my lack of understanding is simple - the modern world has been ruled by marketing for 100+ years and I find no reason why the economy of the future would need billions of unemployed people. It would be good to solve this problem from the other end and instead of thinking about basic income, think of how humanity will benefit the world of the future and get a commensurate reward for it.
Wow, Worldcoin sounds like an incredibly promising solution! Building a large identity and financial network for everyone's benefit is truly revolutionary. Excited to see how this public utility will empower individuals globally 💪💙
