I guess it depends significantly on the kind of company you are trying to build. There is no right or wrong answer. Raising capital sets an exit expectation of a certain scale and velocity. Of course there are anomalies in between too. Atlassian if I recall correctly was bootstrapped and significantly profitable for the longest time.
