I answered as a developer too, most companies I worked in didn't require time tracing. except one where we needed to fill the tasks and time spend daily and it was checked to calculate salary each month. Often we filled the gaps approximately because no convenient tool was used on corporate level. I try my best to track simply to have better understanding myself, but in the end I always fail...
