From someone who has worked both in-house and freelance designer, I'd say that having someone in-house speeds up things. It also allows you as a team to better understand the project/product as a whole. However, if you choose to outsource the branding and design, communication is the key.

What I like about social media is the direct engagement with customers through broader options of storytelling. As for email marketing, you can have a more direct line of communication with your target audience and a higher conversion rate.

Slack. And for better and faster communication, I rather have a 2 mins huddle, than have an hour-long thread conversation with my team. It seems to work quite nicely for us designers.

From experience there are three things I focus on the most, the eagerness to learn, how they talk about their previous job, and the willingness to ask questions. For me that tells a lot about someone. I'm a firm believer that soft skills can't be taught, but hard skills can.
