  • A few words about Bluesky

It was 2006 when Jack Dorsey created a microblogging social network called Twitter. Over time, this platform became one of the most respected. Celebrities, government officials, and journalists began to appear on it. This mix of people created a place where world events took place. First, a tweet was created, and then a newspaper article about the event was published. Twitter reflected current events. It even introduced hashtags. You read that right. Hashtags were not created on Instagram, but on Twitter on August 23, 2007. People only needed 280 characters to say everything important. However, its popularity began to stagnate with the arrival of new management ā€“ one of the richest people in the world, Elon Musk, bought it for 44 billion US dollars. Under his leadership, the social network is losing its solid ground. It comes up with new (sometimes unnecessary features), fires employees, blocks people, and charges for services that used to be publicly available and free (such as 2-factor authentication). People need a place where they can feel safe. They want a social network where they can have certainty. To experience the "good old Twitter". And now is the most suitable time for a new platform to emerge ā€“ Bluesky. It is funded by none other than the founder of Twitter, Jack Dorsey. He entrusted a team of experts who are co-creating something old-new. What do I mean? Let's break it down into concise and clear points. šŸ”µ Bluesky largely resembles what Twitter once was. BUT... šŸ”µ It is an attempt at a decentralized social network. (Imagine that the data you share on a social network, e.g. on Facebook, is only on servers owned by Meta. What if there is an outage of this server + backup servers? You can lose all followers, contacts, data, and so on. But with decentralization, these things are "dispersed" across multiple independent locations. In the event of an outage, you may not lose them.) ā€“ this is just a simplified explanation šŸ”µ This social network essentially functions like a Web/Blog or Email. You can even "link" your handle @ to your domain, thereby authorizing your account. This allows for the identification of authentic accounts ā€“ based on the websites they are associated with. šŸ”µ The application is in Beta testing. It has approximately 50,000 users and is available on both iOS and Android. It even has its desktop version https://staging.bsky.app/. šŸ”µ Some well-known personalities have already registered, such as directors James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead). šŸ”µ Some people have started calling posts "skeeties" ā€“ similar to tweets ā€“ but it's not an official name. The community has unofficially agreed. And that's how it should be with decentralized operation and democracy. šŸ”µ Downloading the app in Google Play and App Store is growing rapidly (in the "Social Networks" category of downloads, it is moving up really fast). šŸ”µ People can register only based on invitations (Invite codes) ā€“ current users receive these after some time spent on the platform (usually after 2 weeks). People here do not communicate formally. Rather, imagine "shitposting" ā€“ you post anything that comes to mind. The atmosphere is friendly. No product pushing. It's like any app in its early stages of development ā€“ posting pictures of kittens, blue skies, and "skeeting" MEMEs. Bluesky refers to an initiative led by Twitter to develop an open and decentralized social media protocol. The aim is to enable users to have more control over their social media experience and promote interoperability across various platforms.
