What are your thoughts on marketing in startups? Is it necessary for startups?

Absolutely!
I would go so far as to say that marketing is probably the most important to thing to get right.
It doesn’t matter how well your product works if no one knows about it.

@navinpeiris Agreed. I value marketing myself. However, I find that a lot of products, particularly tech products, are acting differently. They'll presume that if your product is excellent enough, word of mouth will draw attention to it, or they'll think that product-led growth would drive growth, which is confusing these days.
@fiona_qin1 It’s the whole “Build and they will come” mentality. I would argue that for every product that that’s worked, thousands would have failed.
I think it’s also because for most founders, building is a pleasure and marketing is a chore, and so is easier to ignore and avoid.

Absolutely yes, in order to collect people's opinions and criticism, and when your product suits users, then it will definitely enter the big market.
