Lead magnet were extremely effective a few years ago.
Now there are way too many and they've lost effectiveness especially if your promotion plan is a pop up on your website.
I'm a strong advocate of code as a lead magnet. Building a simple free product that is adjacent to your business can drive a huge amount of leads, has a very high perceived value and it's easier to promote!

@massimocw Agree! Lead magnets nowadays need to be incredibly good for it to work, and people must not think that it sells itself. Sometimes it does, but most of the time you need to market even your free stuff.

The answer definitely depends on the type of lead magnet and on your target.
In France, for marketing persons, fun and short lead magnets work wonders.
