I am planning to add to my product something like "Invite others and get pro features for free". Have you tried or seen anything like this? What are your thoughts on this?

How will you know they have invited a legitimate user? Often with referral programs, you wait until the new customer has paid you before giving value back. Otherwise, people can just make new email addresses and invite those. We wrote a bit about referral program design here. https://upollo.ai/blog/referral-...

I've looked into and talked with different founders about referral loops. They seem very strong. I run a newsletter and will be adding one in the next two weeks. It just depends on what the rewards for referral milestones are and what % of your user-base (or subscribers) in my case come from referrals. All signs point to "it's worth trying." Best of luck!

I feel a great referral program works if both the person who refers and who gets referred get something out of it. We are trying to something similar at SocialBoat, where someone can earn points by adding members in their fitness team at SocialBoat. We are presently live, you can check it out.

Works as long as the invited users don't just drop or the product. Also have to watch out for multi accounting.

Yes, many products offer rewards for referrals. If the product provides enough value, it can be an effective way of incentivizing users to promote growth.

@nathan_kridler have you ever seen a case where you kind of presell pro features? We don't have them launched yet, but we are thinking of offering them for free once they launch to everyone who invites a referral right now.

@farid_sukurov Yes, I've seen variations of that. Some offer pro-features for a trial period too. I think SEMrush offers a free 14 day trial for all of the pro features, than it reverts back to free or basic depending on what plan you select after the trial ends.

Plenty of products out there which let people pay for some premium service/subscription through referrals. It works, but the prerequisite is that your product is something valuable enough, while costing significantly enough for people to expand their social capital/influence on promoting it. e.g. if it's some meme generator that costs $2/month - it's neither valuable enough as a product if its not free, nor the price of it (if I truly find it so valuable) worth me harassing my contacts over it.

@michaelflux I agree, but my case is a bit different. We don't have the pro features launched yet, so there is no price tag on them, we are just trying to grow our audience, and we are going to promise pro features for free once they launch for everyone who invites someone else right now.
