How do you keep track of Competitors without losing focus?

I'm working on Draftly (dot) so, a tool to help people and businesses grow on LinkedIn. Recently, I had an experience that made me think. I wan on a call with a potential customer, and during the call they asked how we compared to another tool. I had never heard of it. Turns out, this competitor launched a few months ago and was getting attention in the same space. I tried to learn about them on the spot while on the call, but it didn't go well. The customer didn't sign up, and I realized I need to do a better job of staying updated on new tools in my space. As a small team, it's hard to keep up. We're busy building and improving Draftly, so tracking every new competitor feels impossible. Just curious: - How do you find out about new competitors early? - Do you track their features and updates regularly? If yes, how? - Are there tools, platforms, communities that help you stay on top of things? Would love to hear how others manage this.

It’s tough to keep up with competitors while staying focused on building, but a few strategies can help. Set up Google Alerts for keywords like "LinkedIn growth tools," follow your category on Product Hunt, and use tools like Mention or Twitter searches to track discussions. Listen to your customers—when they mention competitors, ask why they’re considering them. Subscribe to competitors’ newsletters or blogs and use tools like Feedly to track updates in one place. Focus on competitors targeting the same audience and don’t stress over every feature—focus on what makes your product unique. Tools like BuiltWith, SimilarWeb, and G2 can also help you track trends and new players without losing focus on what matters most: solving your customers’ problems better than anyone else.

Fine, ill go first Honestly, I keep track of competitors by stalking them on socials—just to see what’s up! But I make sure not to get caught up in what they’re doing. It’s all about learning from their moves while staying focused on your own goals and growth.

I’ve found that it’s important to keep a balance between tracking competitors and staying focused on your own goals. One approach I use is setting specific time blocks for competitor research—like once a week—so it doesn't take over my day. I focus on understanding their key strategies, what’s working for them, and areas where they might be lacking. But the majority of my time is dedicated to refining my own product and customer experience. This way, I stay informed but don’t lose sight of my own vision. Another helpful tip is using tools that track competitor activity automatically (like SpyFu or SEMrush), which helps streamline the process and reduces manual research time.
