I don"t think there is a good o bad model. In my opinion it mostly depends on how you want to work.

Running a subscription based agency  requires a high level of automation to get as many customers as possible simultaneously. So you focus more on running a business than designing for your clients.

I personnally prefer to have few high-end clients, 1 or 2 simultaneously, not more, so I can spend a lot of times with them and delivering high quality work. Because I'd rather focus on designing than on running a business.
