Product makers, what is your experience with affiliate marketing?

In the last 15 years, I have had only a few sales through affiliate partners. Even when I am contacted by 'review portals', they ask for a fixed fee rather than a cut of the sales. Affiliate marketing—is it a myth? Does anyone have a success story to share?
