  • Should governments help startups?

If Yes/No – Why? And if "YES" – what kind of support would you welcome? (For example financial assistance, expert advice, etc.)

@busmark_w_nika that only startups that are important enough should get funding from the government

I'd say they don't need to actively help, but they should absolutely not get in the way. If they don't do that I'm already satisfied😂

@maurizioisendoorn Hahaha, I think I know what you mean. Everywhere where the government tries to step in... there is a mess then. 😂

Yes, through tax breaks. Don't make us apply to anything.

@rbatista19 I also had this in my mind. Some restrictions and tax rates are crazy :D We now have a new government and servants in the front line... we fu** it up. :D hmm... nevermind. Maybe in next 4 – 5 years :D

Best way government can help startups from my experience is financial incentives, i.e. grants, loans, tax discounts...the government can also facilitate the development of the startup ecosystem by subsidizing incubators/start up campuses

No but there should be lenient rules and regulations related to taxes.

In my opinion, yes, though the amount of investment must be based on the potential of the startup to grow well. Regarding the support, as you've noted, both financial and expert advice can be provided, however, the amount could be tuned based on the growth potential, in my opinion.

@hosseinyazdi That is a good point. My question is: Where can the government get that money from (for financing startups)? Because I think it will reflect in (maybe higher taxes for citizens).

I got you now @busmark_w_nika. Maybe through share proportion in revenue similar to how investors invest on startup, but with a lesser rate to be more supportive,

100% should, the development of the country is based on the development of new technologies

At its core, a startup is just a small business. Government already supports small businesses via loans, grants, incubators, partnerships etc. I think some people get stuck on the "startup" nomenclature as high flying companies with tons of money in the bank

Whenever I see 'government' and 'help' in the same sentence, it makes me really nervous to be honest.

Absolutely, governments should support startups as they are pivotal in driving innovation and economic growth. By providing resources and creating a favorable regulatory environment, they can significantly accelerate the success of emerging businesses.

If you dont have a strong VC culture like in Silicon Valley, potentially yes, i.e., in the EU

@pavel_demidovich I did not know about that. Interesting how various governments approach entrepreneurship differently.

Governments should support startups only if access to assistance is truly equal for everyone. I don't have a lot of experience, but in my country (Italy), access to assistance is often contingent on personal connections, favors, and partly personal gains (a softer way of saying "corruption"). Instead, it should be contingent on the actual objective characteristics of the project.

Of course yes. Government is for proper allocation of resources, whereas in a total free market which influences the political sides, it's natural for government to tend to enterprises without interferance, leading to widespread monopoly.

Yes, for the good of the country. A country that seriously helps start-ups will also, in the long run, have a better business climate for the benefit of the wealth of the country

@trumpeter Yeah. There are two camps: people who agree that the government should help because it can help the economy, on the other side there are people who prefer not to have government intervention because it would make things worse. It probably depends on the country and its internal system, political regime, etc.
