Hey, I’m Gavin and I’m building thirdwork, a talent platform that matches web3 and crypto startups with expert product, design and marketing talent.
It seems like 'community' often means a 10k person Discord or some in-person happy hours. Is that real community?

I think, for "thriving and caring" it's got to be how newbies are treated. A lot of communities turn into an inward looking circle where you need history and cred to get engagement 👀
The best communities I'm part of are self organising (even if it didn't start that way) with the community willing to call people out (politely) for 'bad' behaviour without the need for a mod.
I don't feel there's a difference between IRL or online, low or high member numbers as far as this is concerned.

@matt_harbord That's a great point, and really hard to get right. There's something inherent in many groups where they became really inward looking. Super interesting to hear that some communities may have started out with defined leaders but turned self-organizing!
